Water Ways

New York City is a product of its waterways. Before highways, bridges, and tunnels connected the city to the rest of the mainland, residents navigated its bodies of water for transportation, commerce, shipping, and leisure.

The Hudson River has inspired people for centuries — from Native American tribes like the Lenape, who named it Mahicantuck, or the “river that flows two ways,” to 17th-century English explorer Henry Hudson, to current city residents looking for an escape from the urban jungle. And yet, many New Yorkers have shockingly little connection to the water that surrounds them.

Read and watch my web series about New Yorkers and their connection to the more than 500 miles of waterfront surrounding the New York City area. https://tinyurl.com/2a5waz8u
