Water under the bridge
Recently I had the opportunity to traverse Michigan's mighty Mackinaw Bridge. As I viewed the expanse it conquered I applauded the imagination and determination it took to bring this magnificent structure into reality. Unlike the debate over whether the chicken preceded the egg, there is no debate that the Straits of Mackinaw existed long before the desire to cross.
I could not help but reflect on the tenacity of those charged with finding a solution to bridging the gap. Fighting almost every possible adversity, the constructors took on the wind, cold, currents and depths to build a crossing that would exist long after their passing. No doubt, when it was finished they took pride in the fact that their efforts would serve generations to come.
So to it is as we stand on our island of idealism that separates us from those with whom we must make amends. Differences and slights contributed to eroding the space between us until we find ourselves alone, staring across the void. Any chance of reconnecting requires desire, vision, tenacity and sacrifice. The bigger the chasm, the more time and effort is required to connect. Our willingness to endure the challenge is directly related to the value we place on the end result.
I have relationships that I need to work on in my life. I understand that it is up to me to visualize the benefits of my efforts. I need to draw up the plans and take the first step. I know I want to be on the other side in a place where bygones are bygones.
The water is there. The only way for it to be under the bridge is to build the bridge.
