Water Towers

Water Towers

I must be weird; my kids have told me so for years.? I like concrete structures, especially those that have been designed with care.? The fact that many have not been built properly, a fact of life that has given me a career, is by the by.

Some of the nicest structures I have had the pleasure of working on are water towers, and to reinforce the weirdo label ?I found and bought a book recently “Water Towers of Britain” by Barry Barton.? This contains extensive regional maps with the locations of most towers.? Water Tower spotting anyone?

Water towers stand out in the landscape, with many designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing, with a seemingly unlimited array of, age related, styles.? They don’t build them like this anymore:

Standing Proud in its Landscape, a brick tower with metal tank atop.
Note the effort with the corbel detail under the Tank and the detail around windows and the door.
A skeletal frame of beams and columns supporting a large Tank with detail to the edges of the Tank slab and roof slab.
Webs of beams and columns to be drawn for the surveys; and what about the formwork.
I wouldn't have thought one could be hidden, but I rode past this one twice. A family of badgers or foxes had made the most of the softer ground around the tower foundations, so I didn't stay long.
The Chalices
'Simple Lighthouse'. I liked the way in leans in sympathy with the bike, on its side stand.
Brutalist, with an external rather than central stair tower.
'Stubby Lighthouse'
Being consumed by its environment

Above are just a few we have worked on, undertaking preliminary Inspection, RAG rating and annual monitoring, full Condition Surveys, Structural Investigations comprising both NDT and intrusive investigations for roof capacity checks (for antenna loadings), 'make-safe' surveys, and on one of the above we have installed and manage a bespoke and discreet debris/ safety netting system.

We also undertake internal, confined space entry inspections of the tanks, with some worrying surprises encountered along the way.

Internal Inspections are a must

And to finish, a cautionary note:

This water tower looked 'normal' enough, surveyed with an arranged coms outage, but actually comprised a pre-stressed Preload Tank. Be careful what you drill into!

Got to love a water tower! I enjoyed my spell on the RAF bases repairing and waterproofing them. Seen a few on grand designs converted to residential that are impressive, even though i love concrete don’t think i could go that far to live inside one!

They're amazing, functional structures. You're not weird. The kids will come to realise the grandeur of their built environment if we keep exposing these wonders to them. Car journeys are great - just check the headphones aren't in before you give the 15 minute lecture :)
