Water Issues Start at Construction
This afternoon our production manager was driving back to the office from a job and he drove past this construction site. He stopped to take pictures and tell me a bit about what he found when he got back.
From the very start of building little concern is given for under the home. The vapor barrier was laid in with large bubbles, creases and gaps.
In most situations it remains uncovered after work is done for the day, sometimes several days, allowing for rain and water to collect on the vapor barrier as well as the posts and beams which will eventually support the entirety of your home. This water and dirt, and whatever else got in, is then sealed into the house. It is walked all over and regularly gets torn during the building process.
Large creases and overlapping material also create weak points in the vapor barrier that can crack and become brittle in the cooler months. Until it becomes more of an industry issue and more builders see the concern, this will continue to be a problem.
