The Water Crisis and Living on the St. Helena

Oceans sustain our whole planet. As someone from a developing nation in South America who has had the great fortune to live both in Europe and Oceania, I am well aware that the only chance we have to address the international climate crisis and ensure the safe stewardship of people and our planet is through education and a deeper understanding of the issues.?

Sports events are among the best vehicles to showcase different realities whilst pressuring leaders to make change and big companies to take responsibility for their impact on the environment.

Chile, my home country, is the only nation in the world that says in its constitution that “water can be treated as private property”.

Furthermore, 2022 was the fourth driest year on record in Chile which has deeply affected the large population living in areas suffering from severe water shortage.

Therefore you can imagine, from a very young age I understood the importance of water and what a privilege it is to have access to it.

But it shouldn’t be.

According to UNICEF, 2.2 billion people lack access to “safely managed drinking water services” and the likelihood is the number will continue to increase if we don’t learn and do better.

I admire Extreme E's mission to shine a light on remote areas significantly impacted by the climate crisis, like Chile.

The more people are informed, the more they can get involved in creating change because accessibility creates opportunity.

This championship has the power to showcase how different industries can work towards reducing emissions, using water sustainably, and finding alternative fuels such as electricity and green hydrogen.

We all have a responsibility to understand the impact our way of living has on our planet - so we must listen to scientists, understand their language and make it our own - bearing witness to the consequences of our actions, thinking twice when we make decisions and recognising the positive impact we can all have on our world.

I’m not sure where I’d love to live, but I’m sure it must be by the sea. This is why I have lived in New Zealand, Tonga, Australia and now, the St. Helena. During my time on board and thanks to the Legacy projects and the scientific committee, I will learn more about our oceans, the importance of water and my passion for its conservation will only grow deeper.

Through our platforms, I aim to inspire others to incorporate habits that help the environment and gradually move towards a more sustainable lifestyle, as will I.

I hope that my role also inspires more women to pursue a career in motorsports, no matter where they come from, and understand that this is also a women’s world and together with Extreme E and every other company that is fighting for gender equality, we are unstoppable.

Los océanos sostienen todo nuestro planeta.

Haber nacido en América del Sur, tener la gran fortuna de vivir, estudiar y trabajar tanto en Europa como en Oceanía, han ampliado mi perspectiva y permitido ser consciente de que la única oportunidad que tenemos para abordar la crisis climática internacional, garantizar nuestra sobrevivencia y la del mundo, es a través de la educación transversal y una comprensión más profunda de los problemas que enfrentamos.

Los eventos deportivos son uno de los mejores vehículos para visibilizar diferentes realidades y a la vez, presionar a líderes y grandes empresas para que asuman la responsabilidad de su impacto en el medio ambiente, y generen cambios sustanciales.

Chile, mi país natal, es la única nación del mundo que establece en su constitución que “el agua puede ser tratada como propiedad privada”. A raíz de esto aprendí, desde muy temprana edad, la importancia del agua y que tener acceso a ella es un privilegio. Pero no debería serlo.

El 2022 fue el cuarto a?o más seco registrado en Chile, lo que afectó profundamente a la gran población que vive en áreas que sufren una grave escasez de agua. Asimismo, según UNICEF, 2.2 billones de personas alrededor del mundo carecen de acceso a “servicios de agua potable administrados de manera segura” y es probable que el número siga aumentando si continuamos desperdiciando y considerando ilimitado este recurso natural.

Todos tenemos la responsabilidad de ser proactivos y comprender el impacto que nuestra forma de vida tiene en el ecosistema, por lo que necesitamos escuchar a los científicos, entender su lenguaje y hacerlo propio, para poder modificar peque?os hábitos y costumbres que perjudican al entorno. Urge dimensionar el impacto positivo que podemos tener en el mundo, como individuos y colectivo, además del alcance que tienen las malas prácticas de algunas grandes industrias, responsables en gran parte, del mal uso y desperdicio del agua.

Admiro la misión de Extreme E de dar visibilidad a áreas remotas afectadas significativamente por la crisis climática, como Chile, ya que la accesibilidad crea oportunidad, y cuantas más personas estén informadas, más podrán involucrarse en la cruzada por el planeta.

Este campeonato tiene el poder de mostrar cómo las diferentes industrias pueden trabajar para reducir las emisiones, usar el agua de manera sostenible, encontrar e implementar combustibles alternativos como la electricidad y el hidrógeno verde.

No estoy segura de dónde quiero vivir, pero sé de que debe ser cerca del mar. Es por eso que he vivido en Nueva Zelanda, Tonga, Australia y ahora, en St. Helena. Durante mi tiempo a bordo y gracias a los proyectos Legacy y al comité científico, aprenderé más sobre nuestros océanos, la importancia del agua y mi pasión por su conservación solo se hará más profunda.

A través de nuestras plataformas ansío inspirar a otros a incorporar hábitos que ayuden al medio ambiente y avanzar juntos, gradualmente, hacia un estilo de vida más sostenible.

Espero además, que mi rol amplíe las posibilidades de otras mujeres y puedan ver en mi experiencia una oportunidad de hacer carrera en el mundo motor, sin importar de dónde vengan, porque este campo también es nuestro y junto con Extreme E, más todas las empresas que luchan por la igualdad de género, somos imparables.
