Is Watching YouTube More Useful Than Reading Academic Journals? A New Research Proposal

Stephen Fahey, a lived experience expert in Emotional Intelligence and former Business teacher, argues that reflective practices and authentic video content from diverse perspectives can significantly enhance emotional well-being. YouTube, as the largest video search engine in the world, continues to produce original content despite the rise of Generative AI.

Fahey contends that the highest performance humans can achieve in stimulating emotional growth comes from actively watching video content. While academic journals use rigorous research methods, the brain often struggles to absorb the extensive and complex written material. In contrast, a traditional YouTube video offers a multi-dimensional learning experience. If viewers connect with a creator, they can subscribe and continually engage with similar educational content.

Furthermore, Fahey champions the idea that YouTube has the potential to reduce global suicide rates by 30% by 2030. He believes that YouTube’s widespread reach and the authenticity of lived experience shared through videos can significantly impact mental health awareness and support.

However, Fahey acknowledges the darker side of YouTube, where content may lack academic rigor if produced by non-experts. Despite this, he argues that in light of the new mental health pandemic, we need more thought leaders with lived experience to drive this movement and inspire new research.

Virtual reality (VR) is highlighted as an even stronger educational tool, capable of deeply engaging the brain by placing more thoughts into neurons. Although research comparing YouTube learning to VR is limited, early signs suggest that VR can effectively motivate cognitive engagement with complex subjects.

Fahey calls for more research to explore the cognitive processes involved in video-based versus text-based learning. Ethical considerations regarding the potential for misinformation on YouTube must also be addressed to ensure a balanced view.

Conclusion

Stephen Fahey's work highlights the importance of leveraging modern digital platforms like YouTube to enhance emotional intelligence and mental health. By embracing both the benefits and challenges of these platforms, and conducting further research, we can better understand their role in psychological well-being and educational effectiveness.
