They Are Watching YOU!

As I sit here writing to close out the third chapter of this book at 5:35 AM on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, the World is dealing with a crisis. The World is in the middle of an outbreak, a global pandemic. Every country facing the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) is taking measures to slow the rapid outbreak.

The United States of America (USA) is aggressively fighting the battle to “flatten the curve” and reduce how many Americans are exposed to this virus. The ultimate goal is reducing the amount of fatalities we see when this devastating disease is under control. In this fight, the USA has implemented several directives for citizens as well as employers. Many businesses have been “ordered” to completely close while some have been ordered to close inside services but continue curbside services.

There is also a list of business industries that have been deemed “essential businesses”. The exact definition of which businesses are considered essential business varies from city to city and state to state. For the most part, an essential business is thought to be one that people rely on to live, supports the maintenance of infrastructure, or that may be necessary for some during these tough times. These essential businesses are still open in some capacity. Which is to say these businesses have the potential of placing their workers in work environments that may present an exposure to the coronavirus.

If you are a leader who has ever uttered the phrases “Safety First” or “Safety Always”. If you are a leader of a company that prints either of these phrases in their company handbook, written safety program, written DOT program, site-specific safety plans, company letter head, your company logo giveaways, invoices, office/shop walls, vehicles, etc., more than ever THEY ARE WATCHING YOU!

No doubt your team is strong. No question your team is loyal. I'm certain some of your team is also just a little concerned, maybe even a tad bit scared. They are still showing up and doing their job. They are trusting that you will also do yours.

Will it be business as usual?

Will your team be required to face this new hazard with no additional help?

Will you implement additional measures to protect your team?

Will you provide additional PPE?

Will your team be able to wash their hands often?

Will your team have the means to clean and disinfect tools, especially shared tools?

If you truly believe in the thought of Safety First or Safety Always, the time to show that is right now. I have faith that you will do what your slogan suggests! I have faith that you will protect your team! Great companies start with great leadership…
