It's autumn in London! I'm at UCL for the day.

Urban frontiers

A very busy two weeks: I'm in London, so between projects, I'm in full learning mode, checking out various events and talks. Today I'm at the Urban Frontiers, a three-day urban planning symposium, which is part of the Bartlett 100 celebrations at UCL. There's up to eight panel sessions running in parallel, so after careful deliberation, yesterday, I decided to follow up on my investigations about spatial dynamics in Mauritius (which I'm still looking for partners to help or collaborate on), I've been attending talks around places at the "confluence of cultures" ("ecotone" communities in ecology-speak, I'm just showing off now, aren't I...), such as this one and this one. More on this later as well as the plenaries.

I'm still thinking about what to attend today, but have earmarked Smart Cities as a potential stream. Members of the audience are able to ask questions, so I'm happy to pass on any you may have. Let me know! (Leave a comment below or DM me.)

CogNav group

The Cognitive Navigation Group of the Royal Institute of Navigation will be announcing dates of their next conference in the next couple of weeks/ months, with a call for papers. I'm posting in order to help them reach out to a wider network.

That's it for now! Have a great week!

Thanks for all the "likes"! :) I agree with you Jason Lily?- building communities and creating networks for pedestrian & cyclist movement makes complete sense (think health, quality of life, business etc). Tony Lee Luen Len?has some insight I think through his work and collaborations on the topic. Re: "Smart", there's also the question of understanding why/ how we need to equip cities with IT infrastructure; whether running internet cables in the ground for current ones and/ or build new places from the ground up... Going further, it's worth looking at the language of technology - namely how people try to sell it to others... I'm hoping to write a summary of things I learnt soon. The word "Smart" would deserve a whole essay by itself.?

I am again thinking about the viability of having smart cities centres as exclusively pedestrian zones or cyclist zones. This could have helped.
