Watch out for these 20 Power Generation Projects in Africa

A lot is happening to improve energy accessibility in Africa from grid connect large-scale hydro projects and mini-grid systems and solar home systems (SHSs).?

Here are some notable power generation projects in Africa at different levels of development.

These projects with about 30GW generation capacity will help close the energy deficit on the continent.

Not included in this list are Ethiopia’s GERD ?project and the Geothermal power projects in Kenya and Djibouti which are worth mentioning

Zungeru Hydro Power Plant (700MW) – Nigeria

Nigeria’s Hydropower project reached the commissioning stage in Q2 of 2022. The project is expected to be generating electricity to the grid in Q2 of 2023.

Grand Eweng Hydropower (810 MW) – Cameroun

This project is planned on the Sanaga river/basin in Littoral, Cameroon. The project is currently in permitting stage. Construction is expected to commence in 2024.

Ruzizi III Regional Hydroelectric project (206MW) – Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The project is in the development stage and is expected to reach financial closure and commence construction in 2023. 30% owned by the countries states - Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda.

Natchigal Hydropower Project (420MW) - Cameroun

Construction work on the Nachtigal hydroelectric dam started on February 1, 2019.

Mambilla Hydro Power Project (3000MW) – Nigeria

The resolution of the dispute for this project was achieved in 2022. ?The project is currently undergoing an antigraft probe stalling the commencement of development and pre-construction activities for the $4.8 Billion project.

Julius Nyerere Power project (2115 MW) – Tanzania

The filling of this hydropower plant on the Rufiji river took place recently which signifies the end of construction activities. This project will be entering into the commissioning phase in preparation for commercial operation in 2024.

The?El Dabaa nuclear power plant project (4800MW) - Egypt

The construction of Egypt’s first Nuclear power plant commenced in 2022.?The plant consists of 4 units with a generating capacity equivalent to 1200 MW per unit using pressurized water reactors. Construction is being implemented by ROSATOM and commissioning is expected to start in 2026.

The Chollet dam hydroelectric project (600 MW) – Cameroun & Congo

Jointly developed by the government of Cameroun and Congo, the project has been facing financing difficulties. The electricity generated at Chollet will be evacuated via two lines to Cameroon, Congo and Central African Republic.

Karpowership Port of Coega, Saldanha and Richards bay (1220MW) – South Africa

These floating gas-fired power facilities were planned for deployment into South Africa to help alleviate power Shortage. In 2021, the environmental authorizations for the 3 facilities were denied. Karpowership is appealing this decision.

Batoka hydropower project (2400MW) – Zambia & Zimbabwe

This project is located across the boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe on the Zambezi river. The project with an estimated cost of US$4.5 billion with a planned completion date of 2026 recently completed a successful environmental impact assessment.

Sambangalou Hydroelectric Power Project (128 MW) – Senegal

This project includes the construction of a 1677KM of 225KV transmission line which will feed the four OMVG countries - The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Senegal. The estimated project timeline for commissioning is 2025.

Caculo Cabaca Hydopower project(2140MW) – Angola

This power project which commenced in 2017 is in the construction phase. It is expected to start generating electricity in 2026. Developed by the government of Angola, the USD4.53 Billion project is being implemented by China Ghezouba Group Company (CGGC).

Mphanda Nkuwa Hydropower Project (1500 MW) - Mozambique

The USD4.5 Billion project entails developing a hydropower plant located on the Zambezi River in the country’s Tete Province. A transmission system comprising 1,300 km of 550kV high voltage DC transmission line between Cataxia and Maputo will also be constructed. The Mphanda Nkuwa project is expected to reach a financial close by the end of 2024; commissioning is anticipated in 2031.

Algeria's 1-GW solar project (1000MW) - Algeria

The first electricity from?Algeria's 1-GW Solar?1000 scheme is expected to be produced at the end of 2023. 11 sites have already been chosen for the scheme. The project is an integral part of the north African country's plan to reach 15GW of green power generation capacity by 2035.

Nigeria-SunAfric solar PV project (5000MW) - Nigeria

In collaboration with Sun Africa, Nigeria is developing a 5GW capacity grid-connected solar PV generation project. Located in over 10 sites spread across the nation, the project has a 24-month construction timeline.

Savannah Tarka Wind Power Station (250MW) – Niger

Situated in the Tahoua region of southern Niger, the farm will consist of 60 wind turbines. The project is currently in the development phase.

ACWA Power (160MW) - Senegal

Saudi Arabia’s Acwa Power has signed a memorandum of understanding with Société Nationale d’Electricité du Sénégal (Senelec) to develop a 160MW combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant power plant in Cap des Biches.

Abydos Solar Power Plant (560MW) – Egypt

The Abydos Solar Power Plant project is being developed by AMEA Power in the Aswan governate. The project has an 18-month construction timeline with a planned COD in 2025. JA Solar is the supplier of the photovoltaic plant

Amunet Wind Power project (505 MW) – Egypt

This project is also developed by AMEA Power in the Suez Governate. The project timeline is 30 Months with planned COD in Q2 of 2025. China’s Envision energy has been selected to supply the turbines for this project

This program aims to increase electricity generation through private sector investment in renewable energy sources. A total of 122 projects have been awarded to the private sector as of the end of 2022 in 6 windows of bidding.
