Waste-to-energy (WtE) technology will be Abu Dhabi soon.
The joint venture has collaborated with Hitachi Zosen Innova (HZI) from Switzerland, recognized for its expertise in waste-to-energy (WtE) technology, to spearhead the construction of what will be Abu Dhabi's first WtE facility.
Situated near the Al-Dhafra landfill, the facility is designed to process 900,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually over the next thirty years. The joint venture will oversee engineering, procurement, and construction activities unrelated to the processing work. This will include civil engineering tasks, handling concrete and structural steel works, and installing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems along with other building services. Additionally, the development of external works and site infrastructure falls under its purview.
Hani Houalla, the Country General Manager for BUTEC, expressed his enthusiasm: “With BUTEC's expertise in design-build processes and ALEC's recognized construction capabilities, we are well-prepared to undertake significant infrastructure projects like the Abu Dhabi waste-to-energy facility. We are honored to play a role in the UAE's decarbonization efforts and in this crucial development.”

The construction of the facility is aimed at reducing approximately 1.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions each year. Moreover, it is expected to generate 80MW of electricity from a non-fossil fuel source, which will be added to the national power grid.
Sean McQueen Managing Director of ALEC Construction, highlighted the significance of their involvement: “We are delighted to participate in this essential project, which underscores our dedication to sustainable development in the region. This waste-to-energy facility is a key milestone in Abu Dhabi’s strategy to improve waste management and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The combined expertise of ALEC and BUTEC assures the successful completion of this pivotal initiative.”
Previously, in March of the last year, ALEC along with Bauer International were appointed by property developer Marjan to execute essential construction works at the @Wynn Resort in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, which is expected to open in early 2027.

7 个月Hello shadi. Yes I know the place where there is a huge organised dump site for recyclable wastes. The view there is very impressive , recycling concrete waste chunks into usable agregates in addition to non- organics. Now they want to consume organic wastes to become feul that feeds the pyrolysis process and simultaneously use the generated heat to convert it into electricity. Good work. One draw back in this process will be the imminent production of carbon dioxide , nitrogen oxides and some ashes that will go into the air. It is unavoidable, and if they install filters it becomes economically unfeasible, but in general it will not have much effect on the atmosphere compared to the gas flares in the area.
