Waste plastic export ban takes effect

Deputy Leader of the Federal Opposition. Authorised by Sussan Ley MP, Liberal Party of Australia, Albury NSW.
This week's ban on mixed plastic waste exports is a key milestone in the Morrison Government’s recycling agenda.
It is about assuring consumers that when they make the effort to sort the contents of their recycling bins that they know they are making a difference.
It is about working across industry to grow our economy and create jobs through micro-economic reform.
And, it is about building a better environment for us all.
In simple terms – we are taking responsibility for our waste.
From July 1, companies will no longer be able to export roughly unsorted bundles of bottles and packaging packed into shipping containers – the sort of exports that have often been turned away from foreign ports in recent years due to contamination issues.
Together with state and territory governments, and industry, more than $600 million is being invested in domestic recycling capacity to ensure we can recycle those materials here.

Change on this level is always a big adjustment, but the waste management industry is up to the challenge.
Our agenda has been clearly mapped out: In January this year we banned unprocessed glass exports, in December 2021 the export of whole used tyres will cease, followed by unprocessed single resin polymer plastics in 2022, and the end of mixed and unsorted paper and cardboard exports in July 2024.
We want to unlock the value of those materials for our economy and be a world leader in recycling technology.
These are the right steps for the economy and for the environment. I thank the many people in the industry who are on board with these objectives and who are playing such an important role.
The next challenge is for all levels of government and Australian industry to ask for recycled, whether it be in building construction, roads or a bench in your local park.?
And one thing we can all take on board: If you are designing something, buying something, wrapping it or even ‘throwing it away’ - take a moment to consider the ways it can be repurposed and the role you can play.
Recycling is no longer a ‘nice to have’, it is a critical part of our economy and our environment.

3 年Australia can using our zero emissions W2E technology... NextGen NRG Co W2E landfill reclamation and outgoing waste facilities produce 100% zero emissions electricity and fuels. If we invested into this technology, we could run fleets to clean up the oceans and uptake the world's waste, charging them accordingly. and basically running Australia for free. NextGen NRG Co plants provide clean, green electricity, A1 aviation and bio diesel fuels ready for industry applications. Yes, we can single handedly, change the world. starting in our own backyard. Using the fuel source the world throws away and get paid to clean up. Australia can be the world leader in green energy and environmentally sustainable fuels. Let's clean up Australia and fuel our future ????

3 年Time to take our collective thinking caps out of the drier and manage our own waste through initiatives fully funded/backed by the government - there are so many products roads infrastructure than can be involved - trouble is we are quick to turn a blind eye and stack it in a warehouse somewhere as it all becomes too hard and expensive - would be great to see the government 100% behind change so we don't leave behind our childrens children a giant Toilet for a Planet

3 年Sure it's great what you do for reducing plastics.. but are you really going to "appeal" the decision with the coal mine ?? https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jul/09/australian-government-to-appeal-ruling-that-it-must-protect-children-from-climate-harm?__twitter_impression=true&fbclid=IwAR3J0fmWys1wcY7QRh6On-oLL7sAhAbaizEgEvf2ZWHn2q1u_hmiRSXaTq4
