Wasn't Being a Healer Supposed to Be Great?

Wasn't Being a Healer Supposed to Be Great?

When interviewed by the medical school admissions committee as to why I wanted to be a doctor, of all things, I am sure that I said something like:

"I want to help people, and I have the skills and the aptitude to do so. This is the field that fits who I came here on Earth to be."

Since beginning my trek approximately 40 years ago, I have heard many soon-to-be (idealistic?) healers say the same thing, perhaps in slightly different terms. It is natural and straightforward that when graduating high school and again undergraduate school, people who are destined to be in the healing arts would say and truly believe that and express those convictions with ease to the decision-making bodies at the medical, nursing, social work, schools when seeking coveted admission to those institutions. This holds true for nearly all healing arts occupations/vocations, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, dentists, alternative practitioners, etc.

I am speaking directly to you or the people you know, who now call themselves healers when asked: "So what do you do for a living?"

The schooling can be grueling (rhyme?), and that's just the start. Once in clinical rotations, it becomes even more complicated, albeit often more interesting. Then, at least in medical school, as we get through those years, we are instead suddenly called upon to take the reigns and become whom we were supposedly now trained to be. Usually, if truth be told, it doesn't look that much like we thought it would much of the time, though it is an extraordinary experience nevertheless.

Complicating factors include politics, policies, paperwork, work demands, compensation complications, board jurisdiction, restrictions, communication, and at times, corruption and confusion, tragedies and clinical mistakes, value misalignment, philosophical differences, and misdirected animosities or accusations, become relevant. Maybe some clinicians find themselves saying and doing things even they don't believe are proper or optimal to help somebody or being muted or muffled to tell what they think about something when something else is being done instead.

This is an unspoken truth about many healing art fields; if spoken, it could lead to rather harsh outcomes for the truth-teller in many cases. Clinical burnout becomes an actual entity, and disillusionment can soon rage rampantly.

The healer can then find themselves outside looking in. It can be entirely disorienting and disconcerting at first glance, but it doesn't have to be. With a simple twist of context, this moment where one finds themselves on the fringes of the field, a field not aligned with their core values, is a gift among gifts. Resetting one's life in a more genuine direction becomes possible. After realigning, one finds a new profession or learns how to return to the healing arts again with a new sense of knowledge and experience that can lead to an incredible, unprecedented sense of fulfillment.

That's where Healing the Healers gets its roots. I am dedicated to assisting those wandering the outskirts, wondering what is next. My experience and passion for being a great healer at all costs, and helping others find whatever makes their heart sing, is what drove me into psychiatry in the first place.

The field has changed and is no longer aligned enough with my values. Helping many to be sure, I am no longer resonant with the practices of that field and now find myself doing exactly what I came here to do.

I am a healer. I help healers heal. I love my job.
