WASNJ | Our Students Excel in 2024 IGCSE Exams
? ? ? ? ?The results for the IGCSE Summer 2024 exams have been released, showcasing the outstanding achievements of WASNJ students after two years of dedicated study.?After two years of systematic and solid IGCSE course study, WASNJ students finally reaped the fruits of their labor this summer, laying a solid foundation for their course selection and academic advancement at the A-level stage.
This year, Year 10 students at WASNJ participated in a total of 134 IGCSE exams, covering subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, English, Chinese, History, Business, and Art, totaling 10 subjects.
IGCSE results are graded from A* to G by CAIE, while Pearson Edexcel uses a 9-1 scale, with 9 equivalent to A*. WASNJ, accredited by both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, employs both grading systems, integrating their strengths.
Overall, WASNJ achieved a high proportion of top grades, with 32% of students scoring a 9 (equivalent to A*), 20% scoring an 8, and 9% scoring a 7, making the overall A/A* rate 61%. Among these, the STEAM subjects performed exceptionally well, with an average A rate of 75%, fully reflecting WASNJ's strong faculty, top-tier facilities, and effective teaching systems in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Technology, and the Arts.
From an individual student perspective, 91% achieved an A or A* (7 or above) in at least one subject. Of these, 61% achieved an A* (9), and 85% scored 8 or above.?Impressively, 73% of students achieved an average score of 7 or above across all subjects, and nearly 10% of "academic stars" achieved straight A/A* across all subjects!
Not all students achieved all A grades, but they excelled in their areas of strength.??For example, Charlie, who previously won the "Honor Roll (Top 5% Worldwide)" in the Mathematics Competition AMC10, scored 9 in both IGCSE Mathematics and Physics. Meanwhile, Cecilia, a founding student who loves painting and literature, achieved 9 in both Art and Chinese. They each harbor different interests but are growing with the same vitality, showing us the realization of the holistic education dream at WAS, where "Every Child Can Excel."
Rihanna, who is about to enter Year 11, has completed two full years of IGCSE course study at WASNJ, achieving six A* and one A in the seven subjects she chose, including a perfect score of 200 in Mathematics. "I remember when I was in math class last year, my teacher Mr. Hunter said that his biggest wish was to teach a student who could achieve a perfect score. Maybe that statement unknowingly motivated me."?
When discussing her decision to transfer from a top local middle school in Nanjing to WASNJ two years ago, Rihanna admitted that the "sea of exercises" in the traditional system left her physically and mentally exhausted. The most extreme instance was when the entire family had to help her with her homework. "I felt that studying like this was meaningless, so I wondered if choosing a different path might be better." Therefore, after finishing the second year of middle school, Rihanna transitioned to international education and came to WASNJ.
When she first arrived at WAS, the lively teaching methods of the teachers quickly reignited Rihanna's dormant curiosity, rekindling her passion for learning. "The Physics, Chemistry, and Biology classes at WASNJ are all conducted directly in the laboratory, and we occasionally conduct experiments ourselves. This approach greatly aids my understanding of abstract concepts and has deepened my interest in science and technology."
When choosing her courses in Year 10, Rihanna decided to focus on Computer Science as her future major. "Computer Science is a vast field that can intersect with various disciplines, and since I've always loved science fiction movies, it would be amazing if I could engage in research in the field of artificial intelligence and help computers develop human consciousness."
Regarding her excellent A* result in Computer Science, Rihanna said the person she is most grateful to is her teacher, Mr. Miles. "His classes are always very engaging, and he has a great sense of humor, making the classroom atmosphere lively." Rihanna shared that while learning Python, Mr. Miles had the students create an adventure story through programming, where the protagonist had to complete tasks by overcoming obstacles. She wrote a story about a spy. "This is similar to the final question on the IGCSE exam, where practical application problems in programming are very challenging but also incredibly fun."
Rihanna recalls the lesson on learning Loop structures as the most memorable. She was completely lost from start to finish, so after assigning tasks to the other two students, Mr. Miles patiently started from the first line of code and slowly explained it to her individually. Now, Rihanna is quite proficient in applying Loop structures—this personalized attention is very common in WASNJ's high school division, where the high teacher-student ratio in small classes allows teachers to provide more individualized attention and guidance to students of similar levels.
When a child's inner passion is ignited, it unleashes their growth engine, activating the magical power of "self-motivation."

At WAS, teachers don't assign much homework, but Rihanna is more motivated to study. Every evening after returning to the dormitory, she takes advantage of "Independent Study" time to proactively study additional materials uploaded by the teacher in the system, identify gaps, and reinforce her learning. Through 1.5 to 2 hours of self-study each day, Rihanna has learned how to efficiently manage the study of seven subjects, which not only greatly improved her ability to study independently and ensured sufficient sleep but also laid a solid foundation for her future overseas education.
Reflecting on her two years at WASNJ, Rihanna says she has "become more well-rounded": the one-hour evening activities, weekly sports competitions in football, basketball, and rugby, the annual House Singing event, the refreshing master music concerts, the unforgettable World Scholar’s Cup, and the thought-provoking academic competitions... After coming to WAS, this girl, who has been practicing ballet and piano since childhood and holds a Grade 6 Royal Academy of Dance certificate and a Grade 10 piano certificate, finally has the opportunity to step away from the overwhelming mountain of academic work and enjoy the performing arts she loves alongside her schoolwork.
My parents have always told me that knowledge alone is not enough to face the challenges of society. Interpersonal skills, communication abilities, and a wide range of hobbies are also crucial for leading a fulfilling life. This is what attracted me to WAS—after experiencing an education system with a single evaluation standard, I believe that holistic education is a better choice.
We sincerely wish this outstanding girl the best and look forward to seeing her soar to even greater heights two years from now.
