WASHZ|WASER Feature:Set Sail with Youth as His Sail, Time as His Wave and Embarked Freely!
'This year is a bit busy.'
In the past few years, Robin Shen has planned a unique schedule for himself - earlier and more compact. He skipped eighth grade and entered ninth grade, and is currently preparing for tenth grade IGCSE exams while still in ninth grade, which makes his schedule very tight.
At the end of last year, he successfully obtained the Global Award-Honor Roll of Distinction in the AMC 10 math competition. His plan this year is to take the TOEFL and IGCSE math and physics exams. During the summer vacation, he wants to participate in a university research program in the United States, and he is also busy preparing application materials in his spare time.
01 The Time Runner?
'Time flies quite fast.' He said.
Robin doesn't waste his time after class, as he considers it the golden time for seeking advice from teachers. Sometimes he asks for help with academic assignments, and other times he seeks advice from teachers who have graduated from prestigious universities in the UK and the US on how to apply to his dream schools.?
He has chosen many extracurricular activities that he enjoys. On Mondays, he devotes his ECA time to TUCK TUCK convenience store, which he personally built on campus. He recruits employees, processes licenses, sets up and attends meetings, purchases and arranges goods... Shen and his small team operate the store just as well as the off-campus convenience stores, and they enjoy their work.
He exercises almost every day, playing soccer on Tuesdays, basketball on Thursdays, and sometimes attending training sessions with the city baseball team on weekends. On other days, he tries out ice hockey, squash, and other sports.
02 The Pupil Accompany His Passions?
-‘What three words would you use to summarize the life in WASHZ?’
-?Fulfilling, joyful, and hardworking.’
Robin Shen carefully balances his talents and efforts like the wings of a swan, remaining impartial in order to soar high with the wind. ‘Compared to effort, I think I have a bit more talent, I can understand things quickly. But?talent alone cannot shape a person.’ ‘Self-motivated learning is more effective.’
The open and equal family atmosphere, as well as the company of parents, have given Robin Shen an early sense of free and self-awareness in exploring his passions.
?Even though the timeline of his growth was tight and busy, Robin Shen was always able to accompany his passions.
?
*Passion for Mathematics
He has a deep love at first sight for mathematics and physics, and has achieved the results of mutual pursuit. ‘Mathematics is the foundation of many things, and it's very versatile.’ From the AMC 10 Global Award- Honor roll of distinction, the AMC Australian Mathematics Assessment National-High Distinction, to the WAS Academic All Rounder Exhibition Scholarship, he was pleasantly surprised to discover that his talent in mathematics could also be integrated into his chosen field of psychology. ‘I've learned everything in a balanced way, with no bias towards any particular subject.’
*Passion for Sports
Robin Shen feels that he loves to be active more compared with stay quietly, and his ‘hobby territory’ in sports has become more profound and extensive due to the dual support of his mother and school.

‘Compared with the previous school, WASHZ pays more attention to students' health, and there are many sports programs. There are different choices for physical education classes every semester.’
As an Academic All Rounder Exhibition Scholars, Robin Shen is also a senior baseball player, and his passion of sports not only reflects in his physique but also gives him the spirit of never giving up.
In G2, under mother's guidance, he first tried baseball and really liked it. However, because of his small size, he could not get the main position. ‘At first, I was frustrated because I couldn't practice well, and I wanted to give up.’
His mother encouraged him to persist and accompanied him to participate in national competitions. The ten-thousand-hour rule gradually took effect, and Robin Shen gained confidence in his gradual progress. Later, he actively sought more and more important positions. By the G5, he had become a main player. Many years later today, he still gallops on the beloved baseball field, serving as the team's starting pitcher.
*Passion for Business
Studying relevant Business Management in the United States has been an ideal that Robin Shen has talked about with his mother for a long time. He chose economics in the IGCSE curriculum and turned into a ‘businessman’ mode in his extracurricular ECA courses. At first, he recruited people, processed documents, built a store, bought important refrigerators, and after opening, he routinely organized members to have meetings, where everyone had their own duties and responsibilities, from stocking to selling. When holidays come around, they even chase after trends and sell flowers. After closing at six in the evening, he and his partners still have to count the goods before leaving.
Now, this small group with 20 pupils has three departments: warehousing, sales, and graphic design, and it feels like‘home with a sense of belonging’.
03 The Pupil Walk with?A Sense of Risk?
Robin Shen is very familiar with his body and brain habits and has explored his own method of combining work and rest. He attends classes during the day and studies on his own at night, saying that ‘my study efficiency is higher at night, but it won't affect me getting up early.’ After discussing with his mother, he applied by email to the house teacher to extend his night study time slightly. The teacher agreed based on his trust in his self-control.
He is influenced by his academic genius roommate who received a full scholarship and is always driven by a sense of crisis. Although they are not in the same grade, they play basketball together, and Li, a senior student, often discusses studying with Shen, and they get along well.
Robin Shen's mother also sees the progress that her child has made beyond his academic achievements. ‘He has had fluctuations in his academic and behavioral habits, but his growth is evident in the process.?Boarding house has enabled him to have good self-management skills. His overall?sense of cooperation and companionship has also improved,?and he can discover and learn from his peers' strengths more, and can evaluate himself more correctly and comprehensively. He has added the necessary humility, learning, and?borrowing mentality to his self-confidence.?
Robin Shen is walking on the fast-dialing clock. Looking back at the past competition results, staring at the tight schedule, and anticipating his ‘advanced progress’ in the future, he followed the goal he set early on to study business in the United States, showing a traceable path. With a firm goal as his turbo and solid knowledge as his boat, he set sail with youth as his sail, time as his wave, and embarked freely.
