WASHZ|Visit from UCL
Weeks ago, our Grade 9-12 students attended a series of presentations by representatives from UCL.?
University of London, founded in 1826, is a world-leading public research university in London. It boasts numerous renowned scholars and alumni and is highly regarded in fields such as medicine, engineering, law, and cultural studies. It is the second largest university in terms of total enrolment and one of the universities with the highest number of postgraduate students in the UK. It is also consistently ranked among the top universities globally.
Guests shared UCL's various advantages with students from WASHZ. Firstly, located in the heart of London, it provides convenient transportation and allows students to fully experience the diverse culture and international academic atmosphere of London. Additionally, a high level of internationalization, with students and teachers from all over the world, offering extensive opportunities for exchange and collaboration. Finally, UCL's alumni network is extensive and can be of great help for future career development.
We are fortunate to have several alumni from UCL on our teaching staff. This means we can provide first-hand advice and guidance about entry into the university and life in London to any student aiming to applying there. Also, UCL will be one of the London universities that we will tour around when Grade 10-12 students visit the UK in the summer.
In the presentation the visitors mentioned that UCL has pioneered 'disruptive thinking since 1826'. Indeed, if you visit the UCL website, you will see that this is something they actively promote as a strength, especially as a leading research university. What exactly is 'disruptive thinking'? In essence, it is a concept that is popular with innovative 21st century companies and it is all about 'thinking differently'. Specifically, it is an approach to thinking that is radically different from the status quo, so that it completely changes the way a company, market or industry behaves. Take Netflix, or closer to home, Alibaba, for example. In other words, an approach to business or education, or academic research in the case of UCL, that evolutionizes the sphere in which it operates.
