WASHZ|1v1 Guide How to Apply to Ideal University
WASHZ UPPER SCHOOL
Last week, several education experts visited WASHZ and gave two wonderful lectures to students from G9 to G11.
The first lecture was aimed at students in G9 to G10. The experts discussed in detail the topic of ‘How to choose a target subject and what should we be doing now?’
Firstly, the expert teacher mentioned several easily overlooked points in the basic process of applying to overseas universities. At the same time, the teacher vividly introduced the rich and diverse types of universities, education groups, and alliances in the UK. The students were advised to open their minds and consider the world rankings of schools as one reference for choosing schools instead of the only factor. For students who already have a clear career goal, they should also pay attention to schools in certain fields (such as Architecture, Sports, and Agriculture) that are particularly outstanding.
Then he gave detailed guidance on how students in G9 to G10 should pursue their academic performance, so that everyone can have a clearer direction and reduce unnecessary anxiety.
1.?Encourage students to make good use of their time when applying to schools through UCAS. Different time points correspond to different preparation requirements for application scores and materials, and to patiently wait for results.?
2.?Guide students on how to search for majors and courses that they are interested in and are suitable for them. This can motivate students to make progress in their secondary education and know which direction to strive towards. Also, they can learn about career development related to their majors through the search process.
3.?Specifically, how to choose A Level courses and EPQs. The college counseling experts gave examples of majors such as Medicine, Physics, Laws, Economics, or Business Management, and explained which A Level foundational courses and additional electives are needed to make oneself more competitive.?
4.?Students should continue to improve their English reading and writing abilities.
The second lecture is aimed at G11 students who are in a critical stage of application, and provides detailed guidance on how to write a good personal statement.?
As a crucial part of the application process, the personal statement requires students to showcase themselves comprehensively within an appropriate length. Especially valued by universities is critical thinking, students' summaries of academic and research achievements, as well as their enthusiasm and learning interests towards the applied university. Many academic cases provided in the lecture can benefit students greatly.?
During the lecture, expert also reminds students to?‘Burst the Myth’?and not blindly pursue the ‘path of success’ that everyone else is following, but to pursue what makes themselves happy. In the process of exploring university applications, in addition to honors, attention should be paid to more detailed?teaching methods, assessment tests, teaching quality and so on.
After each lecture, students have 1v1 consultations to get more targeted and personalized guidance.

Julia Zheng, G10
She is academically excellent and often wins awards in international-level competitions in subjects such as mathematics and chemistry. However, she doesn't have a specific preference for which major to pursue in the future and doesn't know how to choose.
The teacher suggested that Julia Zheng should try to balance her choices between humanities and sciences, and participate in more competitions, including writing competitions in English, not just science competitions like math. The teacher said, ‘It's not important how many competitions you participate in or how many awards you win, but what you learn from these competitions.’ She was inspired by this advice.

Ariel,G11
She is s a full scholarship recipient at WASHZ, and also serves as the president of the high school student council and a student leader in the house. Since entering school, she has had a clear goal of attending Oxbridge Universities.
Ariel Li asked the teacher for advice on how to choose the colleges at Oxbridge, and what aspects to pay attention to when applying. The teacher helped her list five points to consider when choosing colleges, including the acceptance rate, the student ratio for math majors, geographic location, mandatory requirements (age, gender, discipline), and family budget. Li was deeply impressed by this advice.
