Educator Family Services, Organ Donation Executive Director, Brave Like Mackenzie Podcast Host of “The Elephant in the Room”
Yesterday a small but mighty group of us (cancer parents) went to Wisconsin’s Capitol and met with Governor Evers’ office, as well as numerous senators and representatives. We went from office to office, meeting to meeting, from 9:30-5:00, every thirty minutes, gathering support for the bill we are introducing in the upcoming cycle. Wisconsin is number 8 in the nation for childhood leukemia rates. Wisconsin is number 13 in the nation for pediatric brain AND sarcoma diagnosis rates. We are number 19 in the nation overall for childhood cancer diagnoses. American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) and The MACC Fund know the devastation of what these rates mean for our Wisconsin kids and are supporting us through the development of this legislation. Between the four of us in this picture, we represent FIVE children diagnosed with cancer, three of those children no longer with us on earth. At Brave Like Mackenzie, we will continue to advocate and remain hopeful for a future where childhood cancer is not a death sentence. ???

October is breast cancer awareness month.???(in pink) Hits a bit too close to home this year. My mom had breast cancer below 50. And it's back in the family, for someone aged 50. I fear the routine mammography/ other screening is not started early enough in the UK, especially with an illness where early detection is so crucial and saves lives. If caught early you have a good chance to make full recovery. The treatment options, the response and outcome are better if breast cancer is found at an early stage. (of course a lot depends on type). We need to do more for women. ?? I have a major problem with women-healthcare, how it is prioritised or dismissed. For example, I find it hard to be taken seriously with peri-menopause, I'm dismissed as being too young (am not actually). It impacts my everydays and my work-life too. A private appointment to a womens' health clinic or a mammogram is well over £250 in UK... For a service that women shouldn't go private for. Research into women's health is at shameful levels (even worse for women of colour) and it impacts the level of service and understanding. Discussions are more frequent, for example there is information overload about menopause. But when it comes to diagnosis, offering treatment options- little is done in too many countries. These awareness months are crucial! We need to do more for women's health. As humans we live longer, with that we are likely to face more illnesses throughout our lives.Yet women are: ? underrepresented in clinical trials: currently 2% of the UK medical research funding is spent on female reproductive health- not enough. ? subject to outdated drug dosages (male body based dosages given point 1-lack of research) ? misunderstood: as there is underfunding for specific conditions, like endometriosis, etc. ? victim of prolonged diagnosis, e.g. women account for 80% of autoimmune diseases, and diagnosis can take up to 5 years. Given all the challenges it's so important we stand up for ourselves and that we stand up for each other. Don't let yourself be gaslit at the doctors. We all deserve the right for proper examination and correct treatment plans. I am not blaming medical personel, doctors and nurses, they work hard. But the system doesn't cater well for women. So self- examination is crucial for something like breast cancer: do yourself a favour and make sure to do it! ??? And look after your mom/daughter/ partner/ wife/sister/grandma- their health matters too. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eW9UQBcn #breastcancerawareness #womenshealth #healthcare #cancerresearch

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, recognized each September, highlights the urgent need for increased funding, research, and support for children and families affected by pediatric cancer. With around 400,000 children and adolescents diagnosed globally each year, childhood cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death in children. Leukemia, brain cancers, and lymphomas are the most common types. Throughout the month, organizations, healthcare providers, patients, and families unite to raise awareness, advocate for improved treatments, and honor those impacted by cancer. Gold, the symbol of pediatric cancer awareness, is worn to show support for patients currently battling the disease and to remember those lost. Events are held globally to drive action, celebrate survivors, and foster community among families facing the same challenges. Increased resources and collaboration between policymakers, healthcare professionals, and communities are essential to advancing pediatric cancer treatment and providing much-needed support systems for patients and their loved ones. Together, we can bring hope and a brighter future to those affected by childhood cancer. #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #GoGoldForKids #PediatricCancer #FightChildhoodCancer #SupportKidsWithCancer #MoreThan4 #ChildhoodCancerMonth

Today marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time that resonates deeply with us at HEROfarm. Both Judy Walker and Lea Stone, the incredible moms of HF co-founders Shaun Walker and Reid Stone, bravely fought through surgery and radiation, showing us what true strength looks like. We also want to honor our friends Jamie, Bonnie, Katie, and Karen—remarkable women who inspire us with their courage and resilience in their battles against breast cancer. ???? We love and stand beside each of these heroes, and to everyone fighting this battle right now: You are not alone. Your strength is unmatched, and we are praying for you every step of the way. A special recognition to Karen Stall, who founded the Karen T. Stall Research and Breast Institute, a nonprofit determined to make 3D Tomosynthesis the gold standard in breast cancer detection. Nearly 100% of donations go directly to helping people in our own community. To learn more or support, visit ktsrbi.org. A few notable facts from the National Breast Cancer Foundation: ?? 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. ?? Did you know, over 400,000+ new cases of cancer affect children and adolescents under 20 worldwide, each year? There’s a stark (50%) gap in survival rates: 80% in high-income countries compared to 30% in middle- and low-income countries. Beyond socioeconomic barriers, the linguistic abilities of parents or guardians also significantly influence treatment outcomes, depending on the location. #GoforGold #TitleIV #LEPstatus #WHO #SIOP #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #reducingthesurvivalgap #fullcoveragetreatmenttreatment #universalhealthcoverage #basichumanright

it's international childhood cancer awareness day we all know pediatric cancers exist. we’ve seen the commercials with the cute bald kids. what the commercials don’t tell you is that in canada there is no framework and no pathway to bring new and effective drugs for pediatric cancer. that’s not to say there are no treatments but most of them were developed at least 30 years ago- and while they may be effective, they are brutal. we need to recognize that these are not simply little adults, but childhood cancers have their own biological mechanisms, are sometimes tumours that do not affect adult populations, and children have bodies that respond differently to treatment. we need a system in place that recognizes these differences, including our provincial cancer plans and creates pathways to bring newer, effective, less toxic treatments to children with cancer. listen to the colab.conversations podcast ‘it's complicated. raising awareness on pediatric oncology’ want to get involved in advocacy or have a child with cancer and need help go to ac2orn.com #pediatriccancer #pediatriccancerawareness #internationalchildhoodcancerawarenessday

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. 1 in 257 children & adolescents will be diagnosed with #cancer before the age of 20, and while that number is too high, mortality has dramatically reduced since the 1970's by almost half. But cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children ages 1 to 19. Today's 85% survival rate among all childhood cancers highlight both the need to dive deeper into those that remain a treatment challenge, and to focus also on quality of life, and survivorship. So what is American Cancer Society doing about it in the patient support realm? Currently, 7 Hope Lodge communities provide no-cost housing to pediatric cancer patients and their families ages 12 and up. And we're on a journey to accommodate adolescents at all 31 of our Lodges. The recipients of a second round of our Pups Assisting with Support (PAWS) grants to support animal assisted therapy programs at children's hospital will be announced soon. The experience after the first round of grants was eye-opening, and the measurable impact was large. In addition to stellar leadership from Maggie Rogers, MPH & Laura Makaroff, we have also hired a new Director of Survivorship & Wellness (announcement coming soon ) to build our programming in the post-diagnosis spaces for persons with cancer and their caregivers. And much more is happening in other parts of the organization. A life-changing diagnosis for patients and families, and an experience we feel passionate about improving. https://lnkd.in/gYxhPek2

While we may think childhood cancer is rare, cancer is actually the leading cause of death by disease in children in the United States. In 2023, it was estimated that 9,620 children (aged birth to 14 years) and 5,290 adolescents (aged 15 to 19 years) were diagnosed with cancer in the United States. Each day, 47 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer, and 1 in 7 of these children will not survive past five years. Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign that shines a spotlight on the impact of cancer on children and their families. The month aims to educate the public about pediatric cancer, promote early detection, and support research efforts to develop better treatments and, ultimately, cures. It is a time to recognize the strength of children who face cancer, as well as the dedication of medical professionals and caregivers who support them. Over the past 16 years, there has been an increase in the incidence of pediatric cancer, as revealed in a 2023 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
