Selection & Persistence

Six Months of Preparation for Elite British Private Schools

J.Zhang's journey to British private schools was not without its challenges. For her, this period of preparation was not only a test but also a journey of personal growth.

"The growth of a child is a constantly changing, dynamic process. In this journey, the most crucial role for parents is to communicate with their children extensively, understanding the characteristics of each stage they go through." ? ??

——J.Zhang's mother

As a mother, J.Zhang's mother consistently approaches issues from her daughter's perspective, patiently listening to her thoughts, and respecting and supporting every decision she makes. Therefore, when J.Zhang expressed her desire to apply to British private schools, despite the tight timeline and significant challenges, her mother steadfastly stood by her daughter's side, offering essential encouragement and unwavering support.

Choosing the academically prestigious Wycombe Abbey UK meant committing to invest more time and effort than her peers. This journey was far from straightforward, especially considering that J.Zhang began her preparation much later than other competitors. Hence, during the six-month preparation period, Zhang temporarily set aside her beloved interests, such as playing the guzheng and horseback riding, immersing herself fully in academic preparation.

"The process of preparing for exams is both arduous and monotonous, and it's natural for children to feel tempted to slack off. We empathize with her, but we also encourage her to persevere and prepare diligently," said Zhang's mother.

"The pressure was overwhelming, especially during periods of heavy workload when I felt tempted to give up. Fortunately, with my mother's unwavering support and encouragement, I found the strength to persevere. Now, I firmly believe that every effort was worth it!" Ultimately, Zhang achieved her dream of passing the entrance examination for Wycombe Abbey UK.

Reflecting on the rigorous six months of exam preparation, Zhang gained far more than just an acceptance letter. Throughout the exams, she forged friendships with exceptional peers from diverse backgrounds. Together, they navigated exams and completed group tasks, fostering invaluable bonds and boosting her confidence. The journey's hardships and lessons learned will undoubtedly serve as invaluable assets on her future path, infusing her growth with newfound strength and wisdom.

Transformation?& Growth

Enriching and Challenging Times?

at WASHZ

J. Zhang had initially studied in Hong Kong but, due to the pandemic's effects, transferred to WASHZ. Originally meant as a temporary arrangement, she unexpectedly found herself spending two enriching and delightful years at WASHZ!

Academic and Personal Growth

"After joining WASHZ, I witnessed a significant improvement in my mathematics skills." In the dynamic and stimulating primary school environment, J. Zhang, who previously found math challenging, benefited from the patient guidance of her teachers. Not only did she master the foundational concepts, but she also honed her problem-solving abilities. Engaging in a variety of enriching extracurricular activities, she explored different subjects, pushing the boundaries of her interests. Her creativity and innate talent shone particularly bright in the realm of artistic painting.

During her time at WASHZ, J.Zhang had the opportunity to engage in broad international exchanges. She was fortunate to meet with Jo Duncan, the headmistress of Wycombe Abbey UK, during a visit to the campus. This invaluable exchange brought her closer to her dream school. What's more, within WASHZ's open and inclusive educational atmosphere, J.Zhang, at just 11 years old, exhibited remarkable independence and courage in expressing her thoughts and ideas.

Boarding Life

Growing up like most urban children surrounded by towering skyscrapers and concrete, J.Zhang was immediately captivated by the lush natural environment and colorful decor of WASHZ upon her arrival. After discussions with her parents, who had never considered long-term boarding experiences before, she opted for the weekly boarding model, spending weekdays at school and returning home on weekends.

?

"The weekly boarding model is truly a beneficial opportunity for a 9-year-old child. While children may enjoy the attentive care provided by their families, they may lack the chance to develop self-care, self-discipline, and independence. Boarding life, on the other hand, offers precisely these opportunities, allowing children to grow and become more independent in a communal living environment."

——J,Zhang's mother

For J. Zhang, who has been afraid of the dark since childhood and always sleeps with the lights on at home, overcoming the habit of sleeping without lights was undoubtedly a daunting challenge. However, boarding life presented her with an opportunity to confront this fear. In the initial stages of boarding, J. Zhang would negotiate with her roommates, gradually adjusting by alternating between sleeping with the lights on and off each night. With the support and understanding of her roommates and the patient guidance of the boarding tutor, J. Zhang gradually conquered her fear of darkness.

Nowadays, she greatly enjoys the boarding experience shared with peers of her age. The self-discipline, independence, and interpersonal communication skills she has gained during boarding life will serve as a solid foundation for her as she embarks on her early international studies journey. This will enable her to confidently and calmly face unknown challenges and adapt to changing environments.

Courage &Breakthroughs

Parental Companionship and Support

In J.Zhang's heart, her parents have always been her closest confidants. They serve not only as her guides and supporters in life but also as her mentors and trusted companions.

In life, J.Zhang's mother is an insightful observer with a discerning eye. She has noticed that despite J.Zhang's limited formal training, her artistic creations exhibit remarkable color usage and creative expression. "She possesses a keen sense of observation, able to capture the nuances of everyday life and translate them into unique works of art." J.Zhang's mother takes immense pride in her daughter's passion and unique artistic perception. Fully supportive, she spares no effort in providing her daughter with ample learning opportunities and resources. She firmly believes in nurturing and cultivating her daughter's exceptional artistic talent.

In fields where her daughter may not naturally excel, J.Zhang's mother still offers attentive support. She believes that while some hobbies are innate talents, others can be cultivated through exploration. Rather than hastily dismissing areas of lesser interest, she encourages patience. As long as her child remains open, she believes in providing platforms and opportunities to foster and develop those interests.

?

“All endeavors should be guided by the child's interests. Only when children engage in activities they are genuinely interested in will they find intrinsic motivation.”

——J.Zhang's mother

Growing up in a nurturing and open family environment, J.Zhang has had the freedom to express her thoughts and emotions freely. Her parents not only encourage her to explore the world courageously but also create opportunities for her to try new things. They provide her with ample freedom and space, enabling her to push her cognitive boundaries and unleash her passion and talent on a broader platform.

As 11-year-old J. Zhang prepares for her upcoming study abroad experience in the UK, she may harbor some worries and fears. However, her time at WASHZ has nurtured her ability to live independently and adapt to new environments, which will undoubtedly serve as invaluable assets during her studies in the UK. Furthermore, the unwavering support and encouragement from her parents serve as the driving force behind her continuous progress. With their backing, she firmly believes in her ability to overcome any challenges and embrace new opportunities. She is poised to embark on a splendid journey at Wycombe Abbey UK, confident in her capacity to thrive and flourish.
