Washington DC
When you say the name ‘Washington DC’, it immediately resonates as the capital city of America and home to one of the most famous buildings on the planet - 'The White House', home to the President of the United States of America. When you have a city which is home to' The White House', as well as the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial and the museums of The Smithsonian Institute, it is easy to see why Washington Dc is on most travellers ‘must see’ list. As it says on 'The White House' website, not only is 'The White House' where the First Family of the United States live, it is also the Peoples House, where it is hoped all Americans feel a sense of freedom and belonging. It is possible to organise a tour of' The White House', but a visit to the Visitors Centre gives you the fascinating history of this truly iconic building. The Smithsonian Institution was created by the Englishman James Smithson in 1846, ‘an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge’ The Smithsonian as it is now known, is the worlds largest museum, education and research complex with 19 museums and the National Zoo - there is so much here for everyone, that it would take weeks to view it all. The Washington Monument is both the tallest predominantly stone structure and obelisk in the world, standing at just over 169m tall. It was built to commemorate George Washington, once Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War 1775-1784 and the first president of the United States 1789-1979. The Jefferson Memorial was constructed under the sponsorship of President Franklin D Roosevelt, who thought it a suitable memorial to the Founding Fathers of the United States and to Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the founder of the Democratic-Republican Party. Other fascinating historical sites to visit include the awe inspiring Lincoln Memorial, the Capitol Building, Vietnam Veterans Memorial & the inspiring Martin Luther King Jr Memorial.
While Washington DC may be just the perfect place for the history & museum lovers amongst us, it also has so much more to offer. Enjoy a stroll or cruise along the famous Potomac river, relax in a cafe or bar and just sit back and enjoy the view. DC is home to a superb food scene, be it world class fine dining or a visit to Hi-Lawn on the rooftop of Union Market, where you can sample seasonal dishes with craft beers, delicious wines and incredible 360 panoramic views of this wonderful city. For those looking for a real DC culinary classic, then look no further than the famous Ben’s Chilli Bowl, where they have been serving their signature fresh homemade chilli since 1958. DC has a thriving music and theatre scene with something for everyone, be it classical, ballet, jazz, blues, progressive rock or dance music. A city that is home to so much of America’s political workforce and with the massive Pentagon military establishment located nearby in Arlington, literally caters for everyones taste.
Crossing the famous Potomac River, you will find Arlington National Cemetery, the Nation’s most hallowed ground. Arlington is steeped in US history, it is home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the burial site for approximately 400,000 veterans and their eligible dependants. It is also the burial sight of one of America’s most beloved Presidents, John. F. Kennedy, his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and other well known members of the Kennedy family. If you love your history, especially military history, then a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and The Soldiers Home National Cemetery will prove to be a powerful, emotional, but ultimately rewarding experience.
