The Washington Commanders’ One-Year Transformation

A year ago, the Washington Commanders were a team in turmoil. Fresh off a 4-13 season, they had no franchise quarterback, an aging roster, and a front office that seemed to be searching for direction. The NFC East was dominated by the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, while Washington looked like it was heading toward yet another rebuild.

Fast forward to today, and the Commanders have pulled off one of the most impressive turnarounds in recent NFL history.

A Franchise Quarterback Emerges

The biggest change? Jayden Daniels. Washington bet big on the young QB, and it paid off in a way no one could have predicted. Daniels has quickly become a top five quarterback in the NFL, bringing elite playmaking ability, leadership, and the kind of dual-threat potential that modern offenses thrive on. His presence alone has reshaped the team's trajectory, turning Washington from an afterthought into a legitimate contender.

A Reloaded Offense

With Daniels leading the way, the Commanders have surrounded him with elite talent:

  • Deebo Samuel – Acquired in free agency, Samuel brings a new dimension to the offense. As a true gadget player and No. 2 wide receiver, he gives Daniels another weapon to complement star WR Terry McLaurin.
  • Laremy Tunsil – Perhaps one of the most critical moves, Washington traded for one of the top five left tackles in the NFL. Tunsil’s arrival solidifies the offensive line, giving Daniels the protection he needs to thrive in an offense that is only getting more explosive.
  • A Young, Dynamic Run Game – The Commanders used the draft to find a zone-run scheme running back, adding versatility and depth to the backfield, which should further help take pressure off Daniels and improve overall offensive efficiency.

Defensive Upgrades

Washington can't just focus on offense. The front office has to hit on the draft by selecting multiple young defensive players who can make an immediate impact. This, combined with their existing defensive core, they can start closing the gap with the Philadelphia Eagles

Closing the Gap on the Eagles

For years, Washington has been chasing Philadelphia in the NFC East. The Eagles' dominance has been built on elite quarterback play, a strong offensive line, and a relentless defense. But Washington is closing the gap.

  • They now have their own elite QB.
  • Their offensive weapons rival Philadelphia’s.
  • Their offensive line, anchored by Tunsil, is finally capable of competing with the best.
  • Their defense is getting younger, faster, and more aggressive.

The moves made over the past 12 months have transformed Washington from an NFC afterthought to a real contender in the NFL. If they can continue developing their young talent and take another step forward in 2025, this team could very well be competing for the NFC title sooner than later.

One year ago, Washington had no quarterback, no offensive identity, and little hope for a turnaround. Now, they have a star QB, elite playmakers, and a roster built to win. The gap is closing, and for the first time in years, the Commanders aren’t just playing catch-up—they’re playing to win.
