By 2030, 700 million people across sub-Saharan Africa will be living without access to electricity. For these people – many of whom will rely on expensive, toxic kerosene for power – spreading reliable, affordable solar energy has to be a better answer to life off the grid. (Ernst & Young)
Electricity Supply in Ghana
Ghana‘s energy crisis, in terms of power unavailability, high cost and power failure, has had devastating effects on the lives of the people in this country. The scarcity of electricity in remote regions in Ghana, has resulted in distancing of health facilities such as hospitals. This is putting the health of the population in those regions at high risk. Some rural villages in Ghana have no health centres at all due to total lack of electricity (i.e. no health clinics are built because of bad infrastructure). Furthermore, the unexpected power failures and high cost of electricity in existing hospitals in Ghana lead to low quality of health care delivery in those hospitals. Currently, over 80% of the small clinics Community-based Health Planning and Services - (CHPS) facilities have no electricity at all, which affect the basic health care delivery.
Ghana's government is aiming for 10 per cent of electricity production to come from solar, wind and biofuels by 2020.
A consistent electricity supply is greatly needed for effective delivery of services in hospitals and other health centres. Simple lighting, refrigeration and storage, sterilization, running water and proper sanitation amenities, scanning, patient monitoring and many other services which are carried out in healthcare facilities by medical equipments and health workers require electricity. In addition, prolonged shortages lead to immediate costs to the health care at hospitals, emergency rooms, laboratories, etc.
Ghana promotes renewable energy in off-grid communities
Mahu said the funds will be made available to the private sector to deploy over 35,000 systems in off-grid communities. (2018)
The Deputy Director of Renewable Electricity at the Ministry of Energy, Seth Mahu, has announced that $230 million has been earmarked to promote the use of renewable energy, particularly in off-grid communities across the country.
Promoting renewable energy
Mahu stated that currently, renewable energy contributed about 1% to the national power generation mix, but the focus was to reach 10% by 2030.
Ghana has a very rich human resource base, and with the right support, the country can go into manufacturing of renewable energy solutions.
