Warnings against "Palm Oil Free" labeling

The Ministry of Plantations and Commodities, along with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), are taking actions against products labeled as "palm oil free."

Since 2022, labeling indicating that products do not contain palm oil, such as the common expression "Palm Oil Free," has been prohibited in Malaysia. This ban was implemented on the grounds that such labels discriminate against and harm the image of palm oil, a key agricultural product for the country.

Similar restrictions exist in Indonesia. Malaysia and Indonesia are the world's leading producers of palm oil, holding a combined market share of over 80% of global production.

KPK Minister YB Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani has reiterated in recent months that the government will intensify actions against products that negatively affect the image of palm oil. He recently emphasized it during a press conference on April 3rd. Violating these rules can result in severe penalties, including fines of up to RM 250,000 and potential imprisonment.

On May 2nd, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) inspected a convenience store in Putrajaya, confiscating products labeled with "No Palm Oil." According to a subsequent statement by KPDN Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, the raid was prompted by a public complaint, leading to the discovery of ice cream products marked as "no palm oil."

We recommend carefully considering palm oil labeling standards to ensure compliance with Malaysian regulations.
