Warning Signs of Mental Health Struggles

These days, it feels like we’re living in a constant catastrophe. An ongoing pandemic. Shootings. Formula shortages. Massive layoffs. It makes you wonder how anyone copes!

All of those stressors can have a massive impact on our mental health, and not in a good way. Whether you think you’re developing a mental health condition or you’re worried about a friend, you can often help stop the spiral if you know what to watch for. Here are some of the biggest warning signs of an impending mental health crisis.?

  • An inability to cope with daily problems.

If you catch yourself constantly being set off by the smallest disturbance, there’s a good chance that you’re actually dealing with a much larger issue.?

  • Excessive feelings of sadness for 2 weeks or longer.

Feeling sad is normal. It’s healthy, even. But if you’ve been feeling constantly down for 2 weeks or longer, you might be suffering from depression and you need to reach out for professional support.?

  • Alcohol or drug abuse.

Going out with your friends for drinks is one thing. Spending 5 nights a week drinking yourself into oblivion is something completely different. Alcohol and drug abuse are extremely unhealthy coping methods that can have deadly consequences. If you’re engaging in this behavior, PLEASE get help as soon as possible!?

  • Changes in eating habits and weight loss or gain.

Extreme stress can have an extreme impact on your body. If you suddenly have no appetite and keep dropping weight, or if you can’t stop eating or slow your weight gain, mental health struggles may be at the root of the problem.

  • Social isolation

People struggling with their mental health often isolate themselves. If you notice that your friend has stopped joining you at yoga or your coworker now eats lunch in her car, check in with them and get an honest answer about how they’re doing.?

The list goes on and on, friends. You also need to watch for:

  • extreme mood swings
  • changes in sleep habits (like sleeping too much or too little, or extreme changes in a sleep schedule)
  • intense worry or fear that gets in the way of life (friend, if you stay up all night worrying about how a comment probably offended someone else, this is a sign!)

Your mental health, and the mental health of those around you, is far too precious to risk. If you see warning signs of a mental health struggle, take steps to seek the help you need! I am always here to listen and help you connect with a licensed professional.?

Joy Sceizina Great article! This is the time and generation of mental health awareness. One thing I’ve learned is that most things point towards —-> the Layer Cake. Taking the time to go through the layers can help when something feels off.

What an extremely important and timely article Joy There is so much coming at us everyday, unexpected and frightening .. and sometimes, for some of us it can be overwhelming .. these are and continue to be stress filled times, we need to feel free to reach out and ask for help, when we feel ourselves sinking .. and It’s so important to check in on each other and watch for sign of distress ..
