Warning signs of High Blood Pressure in pregnancy and associated risks
High blood pressure or hypertension is a common condition that affects the arteries, which are blood vessels in the body. The force of blood pushing against these arteries is consistently too high in this condition – meaning that the heart has to work extra hard to pump blood.
In pregnancy, some women might experience a high blood pressure. Untreated, this condition puts pressure on your heart, leading to serious and sometimes even fatal outcomes for both mother and baby. Signs of these condition might be detected during your routine antenatal check ups.
High blood pressure is dubbed ‘the silent killer’ as it barely shows any distinct symptoms. Seek advanced medical help, however, if you experience the following during your pregnancy:
·????????Severe headaches.
·????????Shortness of breath.
·????????Blurry vision or light sensitivity. `
·????????Swelling in the hands and face.
·????????Nosebleeds.
·????????Severe belly pain.
·????????Decreased urine production despite enough hydration.
Most times these symptoms usually don't occur until the blood pressure has reached a severe or life-threatening stage.
Here’s what to do once you have been diagnosed:
·???????Consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplements to avoid harmful effects.
·???????Consult on safe exercises during pregnancy to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.
·???????Take medication given by your health care provider for this condition as per prescription.
·???????Regular Blood pressure checks – Frequent and correct blood pressure checks are important in management of this condition. Talk to your healthcare provider on proper use of the machine.
In case you experience any of the symptoms, seek advanced medical help immediately.
