Warning: reading this may make you angry
I have posted before about the class action I am currently working on, concerning PFC contamination from the RAAF Base at Williamtown in New South Wales, and how it has been affecting the lives of the local residents and businesses, including the farmers and fishermen of the Hunter Valley.
PFCs are chemicals found in many household products, such as Teflon and Scotchguard as well as the fire retardant foam used at air bases like Williamtown. They are biopersistent, toxic to animals, and (based on our current level of scientific knowledge) most likely toxic to humans too. Every one of us will have some level of PFC in our blood. In places around Williamtown, the water has been contaminated to levels many hundred times the recommended limit.
PFC contamination is not an issue confined to Australia - it is a global problem, which was first uncovered in the USA thanks to the pioneering work of a lawyer called Rob Bilott, who took on the mighty DuPont corporation and won. The link below is his story, as powerfully told by the New York Times. It is a long read, but well worth persevering (subject to the health warning - likely to make you angry).
