WARNING! (This post may cause offence) - What ‘Bad’ Leaders do, or don’t do.

Successful businesses NEED good leaders!

What are the characteristics of a bad leader? What is it that they do or don’t do?

Now you are either reading this as a leader yourself or maybe you are someone who is potentially looking to see if the person leading you does any of these things…

  1. Never Give Positive Feedback - Evaluation only comes in a negative form i.e. when you have properly screwed up! You never hear from them when you are doing things well. Criticism comes before praise!
  2. Blaming the Team - Ultimate responsibility is with the leader, bad leaders take credit when things go well and blame others when they don’t! Bad leaders won’t take responsibility nor be held accountable for their own actions.
  3. Micro-manage - They check every detail, want to know where you are each minute of the day and what you are doing. They don’t trust you - or worse, don't believe you can do your job better than them.
  4. Lack of Communication - Does your leader fail to return calls or regularly cancels meetings? Do they blame you for incomplete tasks, which are down to their own lack of communication and worse still does not recognise it.
  5. Lack of Inclusion - You are not included in meetings or receive important updates and you seem to be the last to find things out. This isolation can create disconnection and ultimately create a weakness in the team.
  6. Talk More Than Listen - A good leader will listen more. A bad leader will talk more. They will feel that their voice or opinion is the most important and as such will overlook the team’s suggestions and opinions which can be extremely valuable.

As a leader - ask yourself who could you speak with to have a self-reflection conversation…?

A key component to look at is the consistency of the results you get from the team and the fulfilment they feel during the process of delivering the results.?

If the results are there, but the fulfilment is not, the likelihood is that they are operating from a place of fear!?

Choose what kind of leader you want to be…

If you are ready to make the change, drop me a message and let's talk!

As a team member - you have 3 options:

  1. Put up and shut up,?
  2. Walk away,?

OR?

  1. Change it!?

Remember, life is too SHORT.?

The odds are if you see your leader doing most of these things and this is how they act, this behaviour will only be detrimental to the team.

Yes, this is a tough situation, but it is something that can be addressed.?

Giving generous advice here is difficult so the key is communication.?

The first step is to communicate with yourself, what behaviours could you change that would facilitate the leader changing.?

Be the change you want to see in others. When someone sees behaviour change in others, they are more likely to change themselves.?

Speak to your leader about ONE area that is concerning you.
