I received a message on LinkedIn from a colleague with an attachment. The message made sense along with the attachment and the person was, afterall, a colleague so it was safe to open right? My gut told me otherwise (even though it is not as big as it used to be) so I clicked on his profile and saw his post saying he had been hacked on LinkedIn and a message went out to all of his contacts with an attachment that contained a virus.
Yikes! Glad I did not open it. With the abundance of data breaches, phishing attempts, emails with similar names, apps that we download, links that we click, I am so thankful that we have folks like Felix Negron, who presented at the annual conference of the Florida Collectors Association, Mike Gibb, who regularly hosts webinars and posts relevant articles on cybersecurity, ACA, FCA, Krebsonsecurity, and other vendors that hosts free webinars and post timely information on cybersecurity. Even on LinkedIn, if you get sent something as an attachment that you were not expecting, it is best to call or otherwise check with the sender before opening- even a pdf!
