Warehousing key metrics: Order Accuracy
Kathleen Sullivan Garman

The percentage of orders shipped without errors like wrong items, quantities, or damaged goods.
Variables:
Accurate Orders: Number of orders that have been shipped without any errors. (An accurate order is one where the items, quantities, and condition of the goods match exactly with what was ordered.)
Total Orders: Total number of orders that have been shipped during the time period being analyzed.
Methodology:
By dividing the number of Accurate Orders by the Total Orders and then multiplying by 100, you get the Order Accuracy as a percentage. The closer this number is to 100%, the higher the accuracy of the orders being shipped.
Steps to take:
Data Collection
Data Points: Decide on the data points that need to be collected. This will usually include 'Total Orders' and 'Accurate Orders'.
Data Sources: Identify the systems where this data can be found, such as your Warehouse Management System (WMS), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.
Data Integration
Automate Data Fetching: If possible, automate the process of fetching this data into a centralized dashboard to avoid manual errors.
Calculate the KPI
Frequency: Decide how often you will calculate this KPI. It could be daily, weekly, or monthly based on your operational needs.
Formula:?
Set Benchmarks
Industry Standards: Look at industry benchmarks or historical data to set achievable but challenging targets.
Monitor and Report
Dashboard: Use a real-time dashboard for continuous monitoring.
Reporting: Include the Order Accuracy KPI in regular operational reports.
Review and Act
Review: Periodically review the KPI to ensure it is still aligned with your operational goals.
Actionable Insights: Use the KPI to identify areas of improvement and implement corrective measures. For example, if Order Accuracy is low, you might need to look into staff training or revising the picking and packing processes.
Feedback Loop
Customer Feedback: Use customer feedback to validate the KPI. High Order Accuracy should generally correlate with high customer satisfaction.
Employee Feedback: Involve employees in the process and consider their feedback for continuous improvement.
Iterate
Review: Continuously review and update the KPI as the business grows and evolves.
Implementing this KPI can lead to enhanced operational efficiency, reduced return rates, and improved customer satisfaction. It's a metric that can offer a significant competitive advantage when optimized.
