War on fake news - Infodemic war
2020 was the year of pandemic war. 2021 might be the year of infodemic war. The same tactic has been used in both the 2016 and 2020 US electoral campaign when social media is at its peak as a new platform for information consumption. Similar to Covid-19, if we look down on it, we pay for it in this interconnected world.
2 types of Infodemic:
- Misinformation is false information that is spread, regardless of whether there is intent to mislead/cause harms.
- Disinformation is deliberately misleading or biased information or manipulated narrative/facts.
5 reasons infodemic is widespread:
- Tool to cause a divide or rift between people/groups.
- Tool to gain a political advantage.
- Method to revenge or harm competitors’ reputation.
- Being a victim of Social Proof Effect - the concept that people will follow the actions of the masses.
- To push ads revenue gain from attracting the low digital literacy on social media platforms.
6 ways to prevent widespread of infodemic:
- Consider the source of information. Trust the elected officials and official authority media channels.
- Consume a whole story from multiple sources and facets, not just the headline.
- If anger, hatred, vindication or any negative feeling sparks along, the information is very likely to mislead.
- Learn the differences between freedom of speech and a form of disinformation/misinformation/conspiracy.
- Remove biases when consuming information.
- Label the information as infodemic and report to authorities.

4 年Not all information is useful. Even the most knowledgable cannot render their knowledge useful if they cannot apply it in their day to day lives. We live in a world where we have access to endless amounts of information, and the key isn’t about learning what you don’t already know as much as it is is in refining what you do know and working from that.
