This is the true story of two friends (Nikhil & Vishal - names changed) who have been together for more than 20 years. They went to school together, studied college together and then moved onto their respective corporate jobs. And coincidentally, they got married in the same year. What a friendship !
There were not just these coincidences but they were time tested friends. One of them met me recently and was recalling all his memories from the past, how they always helped each other and protected from every possible threat. They used to fight like other kids for lunch and teamed up after an hour. Their friendship was acclaimed to be an example for others. For youngsters, it's a catch 22 to choose between girlfriend and best friend. But none could break the bond between Nikhil & Vishal. Now, since both of them were married and working in corporate, they were well settled in life.
Nikhil met me recently and shared how his friend Vishal lost everything to dust in a short span of time and needed help. To my expectation, Nikhil would have helped him and I was right. Nikhil, not just helped Vishal financially but also helped him beyond his expectations by offering his family to stay in their house. Gradually, Vishal gets a new job and starts earning reasonably good amount.
Now, he is in good position to pay back the money he borrowed from his friend Nikhil but he is continuously making excuses to avoid returning the money. The real challenge is not the money here but the lack of honesty in Vishal's character. He is capable to return money but not willing to do so. Vishal's character is built with poor integrity and he will further try to deceive others in future.
It is common to find such people around us who take advantage for the sake of helplessness and later harm you with their power. Here, Nikhil would have never demanded the money back because of strong friendship but Vishal had a sinful mind to cheat Nikhil. It is commonly seen in corporate world that people take help from others in getting the work done but then deny any sort of help in return later. It is called self centered approach and intelligence.
Team work is given importance at the time of getting the work done but the competition arises at the time of appraisal. Why can't there be any policy for the team growth along with individual growth? And if there is any policy for team growth, employees will certainly put more efforts to achieve bigger success.
Indian culture always focuses on team work rather than individual performance as it likes to flow with the team. No one has ever reached massive potential by working alone; it's the team who takes the step forward. It is necessary to have an honest work culture where employees do not work for themselves but gel together to achieve bigger goals.
A few ideas to work together are:-
- Infuse Leaders - S/he should focus only to supervise the team in right direction.
- Communication - It should be very clear and transparent between each member and must be done every day.
- Exercise - There should be some sort of physical activity - either exercise or sports meet once a week. The team members will certainly feel great with each other.
- Reward - Instead of rewarding on final achievement of goals, team should be rewarded on completing small tasks too. They should have sense of achievement for everything they do.
- Strength Recognition - When planning a new project, always allot the work on the basis of personal strengths than the designations.
