This is what we have done so far to turn Wellington toward achieving a Zero Waste City?

• Remove sludge from landfill - status new sludge drying plant being built by 2026
• Choose a smaller landfill extension rather than a 100-year one -?status- being built by 2026
• Create a Regional Waste Minimisation strategy - so we are collaborating on a regional system shift to divert waste from all three landfills- status implementing actions
• Enable Resource Recovery centres throughout Wellington - status - first one starting at the Sustainability Trust soon
• Create a Zero Waste Strategy for Wellington City? - that has a target to halve our waste to landfill by 2030- status- actioning now through the long-term plan
• First action of the Zero Waste Strategy is happening now through our city 10 year plan, to improve Kerbside Collection by including Organics, increase recycling capacity, and reduce waste to landfill with smaller bins -status consulting NOW in WCC's 10-year plan.

We must address our city’s waste because we must achieve a more sustainable future and reduce our carbon emissions. Organic waste is over half of household waste to landfill. Emissions from waste are 8% the same as air travel. Diverting waste allows us to treat it as a resource, which helps to start local businesses and community opportunities like resource recovery centres.

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity, but one step at a time, please submit on the LTP now.
