Want Your Dream Job? Make a Wish.

Want Your Dream Job? Make a Wish.

I'm writing this blog as I sit in a Panera after meeting with a friend to discuss his career path. He reached out to me recently asking to meet up, knowing I want to support him in making a career move.

He's a really smart guy. Great with technology and computers. He's been in retail management for years and now wants to break out and move into some type of IT tech support or help desk position.

As I was showing him how to use LinkedIn, he got a phone call from a family member who needed him to troubleshoot something on their home computer. (I can't make this stuff up)

He is Made for working in IT. He understands technology. He knows how to troubleshoot. He likes helping others and the challenge of trying to solve a tech problem. While he already has an associate's degree, it's not in information technology. Therefore, he is going to enroll in some certificate programs to brush up his skills. He had already decided this before meeting with me.

It's so exciting to meet with someone like this who has the courage to make a wholesale career change. Plus, he's a super smart guy with drive. It is going to be exciting to see his career progress. By the end of our conversation, he was thinking not only about where he might work, but now he's wondering if he could start a side consulting/tech support business on his own, while he's going to school.

Which leads me to you. Why are you reading this post? Is it because you're in your dream job and you like to read about others doing the same? (if so, awesome! Click to share.)

Or are you intrigued about the "how to" path to make a move? Perhaps you're hesitant to even consider making a move. Perhaps you're feeling you can't make a move because you need the income your current job is giving you. Or you're too old. Or you're too experienced in your industry. Perhaps you're scared of making a job search or even a company change. Talk to anyone who has made a major career change, and they will share they went through the same feelings.

My advice? Just stop and think: Want your dream job? Make a wish. Write it on paper. Tell your spouse or a trusted friend. Most anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Believe it, and it shall be. Open your mind to the possibility and the universe will provide you with opportunities.

Watch this video of Kara Caruth, Walsh College commencement speaker from 2010. I still get chills and a bit teary-eyed as I hear her thanking her family and kids for supporting her while she earned her degree. Kara, you made such a powerful impact on me and so many others.

Here is one more: MiVida Burrus, commencement speaker from January 2014 who describes how she fell in love with learning. Little did she know that she would join the Walsh team full time in 2015. Looking back at this video, I still find MiVida's message inspires me. At about the 3-minute mark, she describes that she wrote in a Journal that she would someday be a Walsh grad, while she was a community college student at Oakland Community College. Yes, MiVida, you always were destined for greatness.

30 years after graduating from Specs Howard School of Media Arts, I decided {with some spousal encouragement} to go back for another diploma. I graduate in March and I'm ready to follow my dream of doing news/sports on the radio.

I also made a job/career change this past year. I can completely understand what your friend is going through. I am so grateful for the Walsh Career Services staff who really helped me land my dream job at my dream company. I am so happy, I am learning so much, and also am being challenged. I was very nervous because at my last job I was there for over 10 years. Making the change was definitely worth it. I now feel my career is going forward and it is a wonderful feeling!
