Want to work more effectively across cultures? Get to know yourself first

What’s the key to working and communicating more effectively across differences and cultures?

So often, we think this is about learning as much as we can about other people – and that is vital.

But sometimes we overlook the importance of reflecting on our own assumptions, behaviours and values.

In my latest podcast episode, I am reunited with my Cultural Intelligence (CQ)? mentor, friend and colleague Trisha Carter for a conversation about understanding difference and the power and potential of better understanding ourselves.

Trisha is an organisational psychologist, podcast host, Cultural Intelligence Fellow, trainer and coach. She is originally from New Zealand, but after many years in China, she now lives in Sydney.

Trisha explains how our differences and cultural backgrounds can create barriers to communicating and working effectively together.

Image shows a photo of Trisha smiling with text that is a quote from our conversations - 'Cultural Intelligence helps us walk across different kinds of difference'.

She has some great insights on how listening, self-reflection and seeking to understand other people’s perspectives can help us address those barriers.

I appreciate the demands of work today, and I also think we need those moments. Of listening to ourselves and to others because otherwise we don't stand a chance of being able to build bridges between people.

I always leave a conversation with Trisha feeling better for spending time with her and grateful for her knowledge and wisdom. I hope you feel that too.
