Want to be a UX Development Manager?
A colleague asked for my help recruiting for a role, but it’s not one that I’m particularly familiar with, since none of the companies where I’ve worked have had anything similar. A lot of you who might be perfect for the job, may be in the same position I was, so I asked him to help me understand what he’s looking for and what the day to day work would be.?
The job is a UX Development Manager, and it would be perfect for somebody who is knowledgeable about both front end development and UX design, although with more of a focus on the former.?
So, what does a UX Development Manager DO? It’s primarily a management job, as is hopefully evident from the title. You will spend a lot of your time:?
Honestly, it sounds a lot like MY job as a UX Design Manager, except your direct reports will be front end developers who also have a great sense for design. Instead of coaching them mostly on UX design things, you’d coach them on coding best practices and help them solve tricky front end engineering problems. But you’d also coach them on more general things like career development and stakeholder management.??
You definitely need to be technically competent, since you’d have to help your reports with things like accessibility, internationalization, performance optimization, SEO, cross-browser compatibility, and caching. But you very likely wouldn’t have time (or be expected!) to write any code yourself.?
You’d also be working for Jason Wilkens who is great. He also created this video to explain exactly what Design Engineering at Indeed is.?

If you think you might be qualified for the job and you have questions for Jason, you should definitely ask him. Please check out the job description first though, and make sure that you have most of the requirements.?
As I mentioned before, this is not at all an entry level position. It requires significant experience in both front end coding and management.?
It is remote friendly for folks in the US, and a West Coast time zone is preferred, since the team you’ll be working with is mostly in the Seattle area.
Indeed does have different pay bands for different locations. If you’re in Seattle, New York, or the SF Bay Area, for example, the pay band is higher than what’s shown in the listing, so please don’t be put off if the salary doesn’t look competitive for your area. We are also constantly updating our pay bands to try to be more competitive with the local economy.?We also have a bonus program, RSU grants, a matched 401k, and lots of other big company benefits, so keep in mind that salary is only a part of the total compensation package.?
And, of course, we’d love it if you had experience in UX design or, at least, working closely with UX designers.?
If you meet the requirements, please apply! We’d love to talk to you.
