Want to be a NED? Have a perspective

It may be dauting to prepare for a Board interview, especially if the industry your target company operates in is new to you. Due diligence is of course key, and involves not just online reserach, but also tapping into your network where possible, to develop an understanding of the challenges the company may be facing, and the value your specific skills may bring.

Your cover letter ideally will have spelled out the relevant expertise you have and how it will add value, and your motivations. You made it to the shortlist. Now what?

Three things may help you differentiate:

- talk with the recruiter, if possible, and understand what's caught their attention, and any question marks. This will allow you to hone your "story", show self awareness, and address any gaps head-on. After all, no NED is likely to tick all the boxes. If you can't access the recruiter, try and discuss the role with a mentor or someone you trust in the industry, their best guess will likely be close enough.

- prepare a relevant list of questions. If you were to be selected, what would you want to know? If your questions trigger a coversation within the interview panel, you're likely spot on.

- finally, develop a point of view. Boards exist partly to avoid group-think, and good Chairs are looking for great collaborators, but not wallflowers. An articulate, well documented perspective may show the panel you have thought through the company and will add value to the Board conversation. And a willingness to discuss those opinion will show you're open to feedback and confident enough for an open dialogue. It may be tempting to play it safe in a first interview, especially when stakes are high. But to stand out among what is most likely a pool of competent and smart candidates, having your own voice is a risk worth taking.

Best success! And let us know how it goes, or your opinion on being a Non-Executive.
