Want to Be More Influential? Start Here

If I asked you if you would like to be more influential, you would likely quickly and enthusiastically say yes.? If I promised I could help you build that proficiency, you would likely be ready to take notes, looking for strategies and keys, wanting to know what you can do differently.

Get ready for a master key to greater influence.? You won’t need to take notes, because the key is easy to remember and might be a surprise.

If you want to be more influential, focus first on who you are influencing.

Don’t start with tactics or strategies. Don’t even start with the point of your influence. Start with your audience.

Influence is a process that leads to someone changing their mind or behavior based on new inputs. If we want to change someone’s mind or perspective, we must understand them better.

Before you attempt to influence them, understand their wants, desires, fears, and interests. Understand how the change will benefit them – from their perspective. Most people who have some ability to influence do this generally – playing to general wants, desires fears and interests.? But the master influencer moves past the general to the specifics of the individual.

People listen for their reasons.

People care for their reasons.

People are interested for their reasons.

People change for their reasons.

The more we understand those, the better chance we have for them to connect our new ideas (the thing we are tying to influence) to their self-interest.

This master key to influence applies to us whether we are writing an email, or a LinkedIn newsletter, building a presentation or presenting an idea to our children, coaching a team member or helping a neighbor.

If you want to have greater influence, focus less on tactics and less on your brilliant ideas. Start by better understanding your audience.
