Want to Be a Moderator, Panelist or Speaker?
What is on my Mind: Want to be a pro moderator?
One way to build your personal brand is to speak at events. You can be a moderator, a panelist or a keynote speaker. This is a great way to demonstrate thought leadership and create content!
I recently moderated at a few different events and being a moderator is a great way to get on stage, and build your speaking muscles! Here are some tips if you are going to be moderating a panel
- First things first, introduce yourself and what you do so people know who you are. Don’t be afraid to take a few minutes to market yourself; this is your chance at the opening!
- Next, it's your role to introduce each panelist and describe what the panel is about and set the table for everyone on what you will discuss!
- Your role as the moderator is to ensure all panelists have a chance to speak and that nobody is dominating the mic or stage.?
- Listen carefully to what they are saying - so that you can build off of their remarks and field points to other panelists to share their thoughts or points of view based on what others said. Nothing is more boring than having a list of questions and then just asking each panelist one by one to respond.
- Create a dynamic panel by guiding a discussion not leading an interview - there is a difference!
- Spark their interest by asking probing questions.
- Engage the audience - ask them a question to bring them into the conversation. For example, can we get a show of hands from those in the audience who have experienced imposter syndrome??
- At the end of the panel, summarize what was shared and thank your panelists!?
- Always give your panelists a chance to plug their companies, socials or projects with the audience on where they can connect with them. (P.S. Don’t forget to add them to your linked in as well!).
- Share the content you created from being on a panel with your audience!
