Want a Job? Cold-messaging won't work!

Over the last few days, I saw a spurt in the number of connection invitations I got on LinkedIn. I am still searching for the reason - but I don't mind, as I believe in open networking, especially for my professional networks.
Along with this rush, came a barrage of messages, mostly asking for jobs. I felt a bit uncomfortable and eventually found myself irritated as many people started sending CVs using the messaging function. Some asked me to check their profile!
Guys, cold-messaging is a very unprofessional way of approaching connections unless you establish the context. In case of new connections, establish the connection first!
What would be your advice to my network? Reply with your comments.

4 年Candidates just need to acknowledge the stark difference between Linkedin Connect option and the real rapport that one has to develop with the connection. The mere acceptance of a connection request doesn't mean he/she knows you well enough to offer you an opportunity.

6 年I think its necessary to go to the root cause of this seemingly "recipe to disaster".Had the current Indian Recruitment industry professionals adopted an approach wherein they responded with a proper feedback to candidate's response to the mass email (which in itself is a process of COLD MESSAGING!) they send to candidates, this cold-messaging would not arise in the first place! Also, don't you think cold calling or cold messaging is just a name of a phenomenon that is adopted by both parties recruiter as well as the candidate. Then why should it become a SIN when it is from a CANDIDATE!

6 年It is recipe to disaster. If you are asking for favor then? at least make some effort to develop a rapport. It is just common courtesy and not a huge expectation at all.

6 年There must be something dazzling about a candidate to catch your attention. I for one know that an accomplished Director like you would not be involved in the hiring process yourself but rather your team will. Hence, my take on this is that do your homework and reach out to the recruiters at your dream company. And do so to not just enquire about roles available with them because you should already be knowing about the relevant roles for you that are open in said company. With all this in place, you have to send over a really appealing reason to consider you for the role. One could get creative here, there are recruiters who appreciate that.
