With this post – I’m want to focus on social media. Fighting on social media, fighting on neighborhood networks, general name calling on city wide platforms. First, we ALL make mistakes. We have all done this incorrectly – but there is no reason to do better and get better.
- You never ‘really’ know what someone is walking through.
- Words are hard to read – meaning, intent is almost impossible to read in black and white. DON’T JUDGE OTHERS INTENT. You will fail and it is a weakness.
- If you have a true issue, DM someone – call them etc.
- Don’t attack – ask questions.
- Reason with empathy. Don’t immediately go on the attack, question their character, or accuse them of being less educated etc. That accomplishes nothing. What you consider ‘fair or reasonable,’ may not be what others consider to be the same.
- Set the right tone. Approach posting in a calm manner and try to find a common ground. Acknowledge difficult times, state your goal – When people know your goal, they can better read through posts
- Acknowledge others points of view. State that everyone is raised differently, has different experiences and will have a different perspective. State the obvious…remind people that we are not the same, but can agree to disagree and be KIND.
- KEEP A BALANCED view of yourself. If you appear arrogant or conceited, you will immediately lose respect. I was watching a neighborhood thread recently…most of the questions could have been answered with a DM, but the attacks were ongoing and rude. YOU HAVE A LEGACY. This stuff can’t be erased and a good brand can be decimated by ONE post that you posted out of anger. I saw another post with a friend who stated her thoughts about something and I watched people come out of the wood work to call her names and ask why she could say that and how selfish she was – this was a post on a COMMUNITY NEWS platform. People see you – colleagues see you being rude, your friends, your community, your pastors, your kids, your kids friends and on and on. STOP hurting your legacy.
