Want to improve your emotional intelligence? Start doing this first!

Top leaders from organizations around the globe often cite emotional intelligence as a key to their success and a top trait they look for in the people they promote.?

In my professional journey to CEO, I know EQ played a significant role in helping me earn opportunities and navigate countless challenging situations.?I continue to rely heavily on my EQ to lead change, grow business, help team members stay engaged. motivated and inspired. I believe that my strength in THIS area has been essential to my professional growth and effectiveness.

EQ has many aspects that we can dig into. Today, let's focus on ONE area: self-awareness.

What is self-awareness? According to BetterUp.Com, Psychologists Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund proposed this definition:

"Self-awareness is the ability to focus on yourself and how your actions, thoughts, or emotions do or don't align with your internal standards. If you're highly self-aware, you can objectively evaluate yourself, manage your emotions, align your behavior with your values, and understand correctly how others perceive you."

Essentially, self-aware people can see themselves and the way they behave objectively.

Here are a few small ways you can make notable gains in the self-awareness category of your emotional intelligence:?

?Ask for feedback and receive it well!

?Be an active and engaged listener.?

?Keep a journal and use it to write down goals and reflect.

?Make time for mindfulness. Personally, I like guided meditation.?

?Take note of what bugs you about other people and dig in - usually, it is tied to something you're not at peace with in yourself.

?When facing conflict, don't be reactive. Be measured in your responses, show up as the best version of yourself, and remember the BIG picture.?

There's no finish line. Keep learning, keep growing, keep leveling up!?

I appreciated this piece of self-awareness. "Take note of what bugs you about other people and dig in - usually, it is tied to something you're not at peace with in yourself." Sometimes finding the root cause for my way of thinking can be painful but the end result is more peace and joy.

Nice article Natalie. All good tips we can all benefit from- especially in these times of rapid change. If we know ourselves, it’s a stronger foundation to work from.
