The setup: Sally has been working on a big presentation that would land her that cushy promotion she’s been chasing. She’s been so nervous about it that she’s had many restless nights and has been anxiously waiting to get Joey’s priceless advice on where to begin.

Sally is an uber-smart, highly curious, up and coming leader. Joey is Sally's mentor: an optimistic and witty leader who always has some wisdom to share.

Here's their conversation in 1 minute over a cup of hot coffee.

Sally: So what do you think of my slides?

Joey asks her - "What's the story?"

Sensing her disbelief, Joey responds: Think about some of the most inspiring and successful leaders. They told stories that changed the world and got things going.

Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” promised equality and freedom for all, Churchill’s “We Shall Fight on the Beaches” rallied Britain, MLK’s “I Have a Dream” created hope and Steve Jobs showed us that vision could take us to unimaginable heights.

“These leaders knew that they could use stories to connect, build trust, and inspire,” Joey adds. “But, more recently science has discovered that the brain just likes stories.

Stories is how people will remember you!

“Alright, I’m a believer,” Sally enthusiastically responds. “So, is there a framework I can use to become a better storyteller?

With his eyes gleaming and widening smile,” Joey tells her, “Of course, there is!”

I call it the TELL framework to tell a great story, of course :)

• T - Three things to master first; when to tell a story, which story to tell, and how to tell it with the greatest impact.
• E - Employ authenticity and emotions that will draw people in
• L - Learn how to create a good story structure - people like to connect the dots
• L - Lead your story to a conclusion with actionable steps for your audience to take next.
