Want to get “Married”? Don’t start with the ring.

If you’re getting ready to look for a new job, let’s jump right in:

  • “Hi, I am the perfect match for you!”
  • “Hi, I read your profile, and I have everything you want.”

?!? :-0

Crazy, right?

Even a little offensive that they assumed they knew you well enough to think they already knew you and what you want?

Now, imagine you are writing a cover letter, or doing a first interview…

… have you ever said those same words??

Don’t feel bad, when I led executive searches, it felt like 100% of the cover letters and interviews did that.

Even if you have the skills and expertise they say they are looking for… hundreds of others do too.? (Harsh, but why a new way of differentiating yourself is needed.)

You’ve got to get THEM to know you’re a perfect match.?

The secret? Actually, there’s two:

Go beyond the resume.

Go beyond talking and thinking of your value only in terms of skills and experience – even when interview questions are focused in that way.

Know and communicate the probems you know how to (and love to)?solve, the opportunities you create, and how you help others feel and do their best.

You’ve got to paint a picture of impact, illustrate your momentum and have them think “I want THAT!”

Shifting OUR beliefs about who we are and connecting to what our impact is when we’re feeling joy, is a process, and it can be challenging at first.

Give it a try.

You can find lots of exercises and prompts to help you on my website.

Let me know what comes up for you. Let me if you’re got some “real life” scenarios where you don’t think this will work.

This practice is often life changing, and I’m here to help.

To your success!
