Want to Get a Little Spooked This Halloween?

Want to Get a Little Spooked This Halloween?

When it comes to sustainable packaging, we (and at least one of our pets) honestly think it’s possible!!

Here are some spooky, sustainable facts, as stated on the Marine Pollution Bulletin and other relevant publications, that reveal the eerie effects of traditional packaging materials…and the shocking cost they have on our planet:

Eternal Plastic Ghosts & Landfill Poltergeists?

Each year, over 300 million tons of plastic are produced globally, and much of it ends up as part of the 30% of municipal solid waste in landfills, where it releases methane gas—25 times more potent than CO?. But the haunting effects don’t stop there. Plastics that enter the oceans contribute to long-term ecological damage, impacting fisheries, coastal recreation, and even human health.?

These eternal plastic ghosts never truly disappear, lingering for up to 1,000 years. The true cost of marine plastic waste is staggering, with an economic burden reaching $3,300 to $33,000 per tonne per year, creating a lasting environmental threat for future generations.

Landfill Poltergeists About 30% of municipal solid waste comes from packaging, piling up in landfills where it releases methane gas—25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. This gas, creeping invisibly into our atmosphere, contributes significantly to global warming, acting as an invisible poltergeist wreaking havoc on our climate.

Chemical Specters Beyond plastic, many packaging materials leach harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates into food. These chemicals, often unseen, have been linked to serious health concerns like cancer and hormonal imbalances. They represent a ghostly presence, haunting not just our environment but our bodies as well.

Invisible Ink of Microplastics Microplastics are now in every corner of the Earth, including nearly every human’s bloodstream. From packaging waste breaking down over time, these invisible particles haunt our water, food, and air, creating silent, insidious contamination (Smith et al., 2018; Cox et al., 2019)

The Haunting Cost of Waste The financial and environmental costs of packaging waste are staggering. Around $120 billion of plastic packaging value is lost annually, haunting the economy with missed opportunities for recycling, reuse, and a cleaner future (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017).
