There are many qualities one might think of to describe the “ideal” franchisee, and sometimes, talented individuals who believe they need all of them to be successful in franchising end up passing on opportunities that could be the right fit. However, not all franchise systems require the same skill sets as others, and not all owners fit the same mold. That’s why I want to share with you a few qualities that, among others, are critical to finding success in any franchise system:
Leadership Skills
The ability to be a strong leader is vital in franchising, and it’s a skill you will want to perfect if you’re looking to find success in the industry. Whether you’re a franchisee or a franchisor, you will need to know how to lead your team in a productive way to ensure the success of your business. For example, Network In Action group leaders provide leadership while forming relationships with local business owners who are looking for ways to improve outcomes for their businesses in a cost-effective way. We specifically look for entrepreneurs who we feel will succeed in this business – those who are outgoing, love to serve customers and make a difference in people’s lives, and of course, are strong leaders.
Willingness to Follow a Proven Model
Franchise opportunities come with their own proven business models, processes and systems, and it’s important that franchisees are willing to learn and follow them, but also appreciate why they exist and how this structure will promote their success. Additionally, franchisees need to embody the mindset of a self-starter, because while a franchisor may provide you with training, tools and support, it’s up to you to grasp those tools and use them to grow your business. Franchising is certainly not the path for those without the willingness to follow a proven model.
Entrepreneurial Spirit
It doesn’t matter if you’re a fresh face to the industry or a seasoned multi-unit franchisee – you need to be entrepreneurially-spirited to be successful in franchising. Without the drive to own your own business, how do you expect to do just that? When I started the first Network In Action group in 2014, I’ll admit I lacked a background in networking. But, what I did have was my entrepreneurial mindset and a desire to ensure that our members receive the best, most engaging and efficient network experience available. This is the case with many NIA group leaders, as we do not require past experience when starting a networking group with us. In fact, only about 30% of NIA group leaders have a background in business networking.
Similar to NIA, not all franchise systems require their franchise owners to have industry experience to get started. However, I can bet that most are looking for the above qualities in their franchise prospects. If you’re looking to find success in franchising, you should definitely focus on strengthening your leadership skills, willingness to follow a proven model and having an entrepreneurial spirit.
If you’ve mastered the skills mentioned here, you’re searching for a great business opportunity in your community, and you’re willing to work hard to adhere to our values, I encourage you to learn more about the Network In Action Try Before You Buy franchise model.
