There are many reasons why people are unable to make decisions. I have known bosses who dodged decision making by claiming that they did not have enough information. Is there such a thing as complete information? If one were to reach that point magically, then the decision will make itself! No more agonising over options, pros and cons et al. I called this paralysis by analysis.
But forget the quantum of information. As a Life Coach, I come across many who, when it comes to any decision making - big or small - simply feel immobilised for another reason. It is a potent cause, and they are not even aware of it.
Let me call it ‘the fear of not being able to live with the outcome’.
When we reach the threshold of taking a call, our mind worries – quietly but incessantly – about the outcome. What if the result is not the ‘best’ – whatever that best is! What if it leaves us troubled at not adopting a different course? What if we are an abject failure?
The barrage of ‘what ifs’ begin to fill up our minds, and the decision recedes into the ‘for later’ column.
Here is the secret. If you train your mind to accept the outcomes of the decisions you take – happily and courageously – making decisions becomes infinitely more manageable. Try it.
Here is a caveat. Am I suggesting reckless decision making? Of course not! The time spent on reflection and thought should be proportionate to the long-term effect and importance of the decision. But not every call needs protracted speculation.
Making good decisions is vital. But the courage to live with your choices is priceless. It adds wings to this crucial ability.

3 年Decision making depends on: *Your beliefs and values *Readiness to take ownership of the consequences *Propensity of risk *Close ones *Right assessment of information needed for the decision making. I believe that 90% of the people even after subconsciously or consciously knowing all of this also, either don't take action or delay the action which kills the energy of the decision. The density of any action based on one's decision may change as per the time or situation. Hence, it is important to act in time. Maj Gen Neeraj Bali (Retd) sir- would love your thoughts...

3 年Sometimes too much of information also leads to indecisiveness. The simplicity and clarity is lost while speculating the variety of options offered by the plethora of inputs.
