The setup: Joey has discovered some newfound discipline in his personal life, and it’s leading to great results. Now he wants to apply the same sort of commitment to the business to take his company - and his leadership skills - to the next level.
Sally looks across the table at the empty real estate in front of Joey.
“No chocolate scone today, Joey?” she asks, incredulously. “That’s just...not like you.”
“I know, right?” Joey responds with a smile. “But ever since I started tracking my meals, I’m so much more intentional about what I put in my body.”
“I gotta admit, you are looking good these days.”
“Thanks! More than the weight loss, I’m proud of my commitment.
I’m getting eight hours of sleep every night, working out five times a week, and eating right. And since you know I’m a data-head I’m keeping track of it all in different apps so I stay on target.”
“That’s really amazing, Joey!” says Sally. “I feel like everyone longs for commitment, but being consistent can be a challenge.”
“Why do I get the sense you’re alluding to work there, Sally?”
“You read me so well,” she says. “With the pace and stress of business, I find myself making more excuses than concrete plans and nothing meaningful gets done.”
“Been there, excused that,” says Joey. “But I fully believe one thing:
In the same way, being committed to a workout plan literally gets me to move my body every day, having that commitment in your leadership career creates a movement that can grow as big as you allow it to.
Sally chews on this and nods her head. “Well, the good news is my company already has a great mission. So how I can make sure we’re all committed to working towards it every day?”
“That’s a great start! It’s step one of a four-step process from commitment to movement:
- Commitment to your purpose → Clarity of focus. A clear mission and vision gives your whole team an idea of what to focus on.
- Clarity → Trust. When you share common ground believe in something together, you build trust.
- Trust → Community. Trust builds the mojo to create a community that goes beyond you. It extends to your immediate team, a larger team, even partners and vendors.
- Community → Movement. Everyone wants to go somewhere together!
So you see, commitment is all you need to start building momentum that will drive success. Just remember to track, share, and be intentional about everything you do.”
“Just like that chocolate scone?” says Sally.
“Or the absence of one ;)”
