In which I enlist the help of Clint Eastwood to show you how YOU have the power to change your luck, and share with you Richard Wiseman's 4 scientifically proven ways you increase your luck, right now.
There's no way I can write an article on LUCK, and not refer Clint Eastwood's immortal lines in the film Dirty Harry...
Because as it turns out, Clint was onto something, as I discovered when I read Richard Wiseman’s superb book, The Luck Factor. If you haven’t read it already, I highly recommend it, because it’s a wonderful – and scientific – exploration of luck.?
As a trained scientist, and after 50 years on this planet, I have come to the conclusion that there is no such thing as luck. That there is no mysterious force acting on us all, handing out good luck to some, bad luck to others. That what we think of as luck is simply how we respond to chance events, and the meaning we give to those events. So when I started reading Richard Wiseman's book I was worried that he was going to turn my belief on its head and prove me wrong.
Can I ask you a question?
Do YOU feel lucky? On a scale of 1-10, how much of a role do you believe luck plays in your life? With 1 being 'if it wasn't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all' and 10 being 'everything I touch turns to gold'.
Hold onto that number and as you read this article, keep referring back to lucky (or not) you believe yourself to be
I have bad news and good news for you...
The bad news is – there’s no such thing as luck…sorry, there isn’t.
The good news is – THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS LUCK…Which is wonderful news, because it means that YOU have the power to create your own luck. You get to choose what you believe, how you want to respond to chance events, the meaning you give to them. However unlucky you feel you’ve been up to now, that is not set in stone. You can choose to become more lucky
It all comes down to this...
It turns out that the most significant factor in whether you’ve scored high or low in the luck question is actually lucky you BELIEVE yourself to be.?
Think about it. If you believe you’re lucky you believe that chance events and encounters will work out in your favour. You believe that life is with you, that if you put yourself forwards you’ll succeed, that if you enter a competition you’ll win.
Now look at the other side. If you believe you’re unlucky you’ll believe that chance events will always work poorly for you. You’ll believe that life is against you, that there’s no point putting yourself forwards because you NEVER succeed. Why enter a competition – you know you’re going to lose.
Ok, I can see that you’re going to take a little more convincing…
The biggest outcome of Richard Wiseman’s extensive research was the discovery of four simple principles that can increase your luck and transform your business, life, leadership, and relationships.?
Principle 1: Maximise the number of chance opportunities in your life.?People who believe they are lucky are always on the lookout for new opportunities – and then ACT on them. How do YOU respond to opportunities? Do you pull back because you don’t believe you can be successful? Or do you take a leap of faith and know that you’ll figure it all out along the way??
So build and expand your network. Put yourself in situations where you can meet new people because this is the best way to increase your chances of a great opportunity coming your way. Relax and be open to new experiences, to the unexpected.

Principle 2: Listen to your intuition and trust your gut.?
People who believe they are lucky are in tune with their feelings, and use their hunches to make good decisions. So the next time an opportunity presents itself, or you have a decision to make, take a time out. Go somewhere quiet and tune into your intuition. The part of you that doesn’t care about what other people think, or what you think you SHOULD do. The part of you that knows what you’re REALLY capable of. And if the opportunity is in alignment – go for it!?
Principle 3: EXPECT good fortune and that things will turn out well for you
No matter the circumstance, people who believe they are lucky expect that things are going to turn out alright in the end. If you believe this, you are far more likely to take action to resolve challenging situations. You will feel like you have the power to change, even if you’re not quite sure how right now.
Simply reminding yourself of your good fortune can have a big effect on how lucky you feel. Gratitude is one way of doing this, while actively repeating ‘lucky’ affirmations out loud can start to change your internal beliefs. Richard Wiseman suggests the following: “I am a lucky person and today is going to be another lucky day”.
Principle 4: Turn your bad luck into good luck
How do you feel when things don’t go according to plan? Do you believe that here, yet again, is proof that you’re the unluckiest person in the world? Or do you choose to view these unfortunate circumstances through the lens of luck??
Looking on the positive side is transformative. Comparing what has happened with what COULD have happened is a great way to regain perspective and makes you grateful that things are not worse or more serious.?Which helps you build resilience, to take steps to protect yourself from the same thing happening again in the future.

1 年This article made me think of a book hinting at similar things - "Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke" Annie speaks about how life is like a game of poker: You can get a good hand and mess it up. You can get a bad hand and really do well. It's not about the hand you get - It's about how you play it!

1 年Dr Jo Cresswell - The DARING Entrepreneur, Dirty Harry had me laughing as well, thank you. I'm not a big believer in luck, but I do believe our expectations and gratitude have a tremendous impact on what we attract into our lives. Expecting good things and counting the blessings keeps me focused in the right direction and moving toward good things.
