During my experience, I was parachuted in to restructure a total of six business enterprises to increase sales, profitability, and market share.
These organizations were struggling and we had to perform. It was frustrating because we did not have well-defined procedures that guided us on how to do a restructuring. I had to gradually develop my own process until I found a formula that worked. Fortunately, it did.
Looking back, it now seems quite simple … not easy, but simple. It was a matter of carefully examining each critical business function and implementing changes for improvement. That makes sense, right?
It required making changes that improved efficiency and cost control. But most importantly, it required changes that focused on those functions that impacted customers.
Luckily, we discovered the solutions to the problems that inhibited profitability. The businesses started to grow and showed consistent profit. We dealt individually with eight different essential business functions.

In each case, the employees that worked in each department knew the most about what needed to be done and made invaluable contributions. In the end, everyone became much more productive, and most importantly, each employee knew how their work contributed to the success of the business.
With that knowledge, everyone got to work, and my job became much smoother and more predictable. Subsequently, in one case, our success attracted a takeover offer.
Obviously, it took a lot of work. It was not easy to do the self-examinations and in-depth investigations, but it was worth it in the end.
Out of those experiences came a procedure that made it much easier for others, and that is what I would like to share with you and your team.
