Are you an anxious person who constantly worries about how people are perceiving you? Or you are one of those who made a bad "First Impression" and are wanting to turn things around? Or people have made a wrong perception of you and you are struggling to breakthrough?
I understand its FRUSTRATING! You might be doing a nice gesture for your co-worker but that person may think you are trying to receive a favor. If people are perceiving you as bully, they might not include you in teamwork. As a result you feel under-appreciated, your talents & hard-work is overlooked. Opportunities are passing you by.
Its time you take charge of your ACCIDENTAL REPUTATION and transform into STRONG PERSONAL BRAND.
Good news! It can be done. But only if you are ready to make a genuine effort for it. As its not going to happen overnight....you have to consistently work on yourself and your surroundings
Ask your trusted friends/managers/peers/co-workers/team/family/mentors/colleagues to describe you, your work, your personality, work ethics, popularity etc. Understand their feed backs about you.
Discovering your "Negative Points" or "weaknesses" can be upsetting & disturbing. But don't forget its critical to gather this knowledge to go the next step. Because once you know whats bothering other people you can plan accordingly to improve the situation.
2. PROCESS THIS KNOWLEDGE
Once you are armed with this information, its time to process it. Don't take this feedback to your heart, think logically and thoroughly. What made people develop this perception about you. There must be something which you might have done unknowingly or in heat of the moment or you might be under pressure. But Something was done that did not go down well with people around you.
Go back in time and try to think of all those instances. Somebody might have asked help from you but denied it roughly and now your peers think you are arrogant. You might be late in submitting reports twice and now your boss perceives you as uncommitted. You partner was talking to you about something important but you said that you are busy, now you are a "uncaring person"
In the long run such trivial moments make huge impact on people around you. When you thought that these things don't matter you were wrong. And now it has become a state of constant worry.
A person's perception might be different from the truth not its not entirely wrong.
3. BE UPFRONT ABOUT THE MATTER
Address this wrong perception with people who you might have gotten offended in the process. Talk to them about the issues that came in past and you are aware of them. Apologize if need be. And assure them that such things wont happen again. Also explain them that you did not intend these negative incidents to happen consciously. But key is to NOT GETTING DEFENSIVE else they will feel that you are ACCUSING THEM.

Talking and settling these issues are important otherwise this perception will keep on strengthening in people's minds.
Once its settled, done and dusted its time to move on to next step.
4. DECIDE HOW YOU WANT TO BE PERCEIVED
Based on the feed backs & revelations now you can decide which traits you want to highlight. With which qualities people should remember you. Look for qualities that people at you as an asset in their lives/company.
This is exciting, right?
These qualities can be honesty, generosity, encouraging and positive person, warm-hearted with a smile, helpful, always on time etc. And if you find yourself in a tricky situation where you are unable to hold-on to your good-self or true traits- COMMUNICATE YOUR INTENTIONS. Let people around you know why are you behaving in a certain way and what are you trying to achieve.
5. BE PATIENT & BE YOU
Start making little changes in the way you act, speak and behave! SHOW YOURSELF HOW YOU WANT TO BE SEEN.
Remember every word & action of your has huge impact on people around you. YOU ARE NOT RE-BRANDING YOURSELF. You are just making minor changes in your behavior to show people THE REAL YOU, one who deserves the opportunities, promotions, appreciation, respect & love.
It may take a few months for people to appreciate the NEW YOU, you just have to be consistent in your efforts and you will start seeing the good results.
