Want a Career Glow Up? Here are 3 Pro-Tips.

Did Your New Year's Resolution Include Professional One?

If you’re anything like me, your list of goals for the new year included a Professional one.? Perhaps it is more general, like ‘Get a New Job’ or ‘Get Promoted’; perhaps it is more specific, such as ‘Learn XYZ Skill’ or ‘Get Comfortable in Public Speaking’.? Whatever it is, this all seemed possible at the start of the year… and then life and our daily grind sets in, and as the year goes on, our investment in ourselves takes a backseat.? It is always the perfect time to take charge of your career and set yourself up for success. A “Career Glow Up” is all about being intentional, strategic, and proactive.

Here are three pro tips to get you started, regardless of where you’re at with your professional goals:

?

Power of Networking

Think about your network as your net worth.? That’s powerful.? A network is not created overnight; building genuine connections can open doors to opportunities you didn’t even know existed.?

The networking I am talking about is not about just attending events and collecting business cards.? It’s about fostering meaningful relationships that provide mutual value.? Here are my tips on getting started:

  • Be Intentional:? Identify a handful of people that you want to build relationships with for the longer term.? These could include former managers, former colleagues, an executive sponsor on your project, a consultant that’s helping your company, or someone who is doing work you can see yourself doing one day.
  • Keep it Authentic, Be You:? The best way to reach out to someone is by being authentically you.? A simple message will do:? “Would love to reconnect and learn about what you’re working on these days [or be specific about the project]– how’s your calendar look next week?” “
  • ·Be Interesting:? It is human nature to engage in stimulating conversation – be ready for a great conversation.? Know at least a few things about the person you’re meeting with to make the most out of the conversation (e.g., learn about their career journey, ask for their advice to help you glow up this year, etc.).

Early in my career, I reached out to a former professor for guidance on transitioning to a corporate role. That conversation led to an introduction that ultimately shaped my trajectory – and my network has been responsible for every role I’ve had since then. Years later, I’ve seen how my authentic networking compounded into incredible opportunities.? I make it a point to have at least one catch up with someone every week – if you want to be part of my networking circle, reach out to me!

Set Your Standard: Silver, Gold, Platinum ?

A Career Glow Up means that you think about your work in new ways, and the easiest way in my mind is to be intentional about the standard you want to set for yourself and your work. Are you striving to meet expectations (Silver), exceed them (Gold), or go above and beyond in a way that leaves a lasting impression (Platinum)? ?While not all your projects will need a Platinum Status, there are some that should be showstoppers and get you the career glow up recognition.? Here’s how to apply this mindset:

  • Define your Platinum level: Identify what exceptional performance looks like for you, and aim for that consistently.? Your deliverables ARE your brand – what you do & how you do it will be spoken about in rooms with leaders.? What do you want them to say?
  • Create benchmarks: Set measurable goals, stay accountable to those, and consider an ‘Accountability Buddy’ that can check in and support you. Extra bonus: they will be part of your network over time after watching your success.? I have several accountability buddies – at the gym, at work, and for my professional goals.
  • Deliver with flair: Going the extra mile—whether in presentations, client interactions, or team collaborations—builds a reputation for reliability and creativity.? The upside?? It gets you noticed and gets your name discussed during important talent discussions.

While leading a talent initiative at a global organization, I introduced a career development program that not only met its goals but was also recognized as an industry best practice. By holding myself and the team to a “Platinum” standard, we created something truly impactful that has now become a leading practice.

Ask, and Then Say Yes. ?

Opportunities are boundless: they go to those who are ready for them. Whether it’s a stretch assignment, a promotion, or a new role, don’t shy away from advocating for yourself – and showing that you’re worth it through your Platinum level delivery. And when the opportunity arises, say yes—even if it feels daunting. Growth happens outside your comfort zone.

  • Ask strategically: Be clear about what you want and why you’re the right person for the opportunity.
  • Prepare to deliver: Saying yes is just the beginning—be ready to rise to the occasion by equipping yourself with the necessary skills and mindset.
  • Embrace the learning curve: It’s okay to feel out of your depth initially – know that after the initial learning curve, you will settle into a smooth delivery flow.

When I was approached to lead a major global HR initiative, I hesitated initially because it was outside my usual scope – I had the same fears of ‘What happens if I fail?’. But saying yes pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated, and the experience became one of the highlights of my career.? I learned a new discipline within HR, made relationships with business leaders that I didn’t already know, and expanded my skillset – which made me ready for other roles.

A Career Glow Up isn’t just about achieving a title or salary increase—it’s about evolving into the best version of yourself professionally. By leveraging the power of networking, setting high standards, and stepping into opportunities with confidence, you’ll not only transform your career but also inspire others around you. It’s never too late to start – Looking forward to seeing you glowing even brighter this year!

Glad to see networking spotlighted here, but it needs to be invested in to be effective. Networking is like any other tool. You get out of it what you put into it. Go the "trade business cards, shake a lot of hands" route and you won't enrich your life that much. But, if you get coffee, listen, engage, and then follow up afterwards, pretty soon you will have a legion of advocates chipping in to help you achieve your goals.
